His (my bf's) mum found out when the IRS (the US version of the Inland Revenue) sent a letter to their house (in the US, if you're married, you're both responsible for the tax bill) auditing them b/c his dad was claiming dependents in two different states.

What a way to find out, eh?

Anyhow, he had 'married' the other wife in the other state, even though of course the marriage wasn't valid.

He was imprisoned for bigamy.

expatinscotland · 25/05/2005 14:39

He (my boyfriend Mike's dad) had two kids with his legal wife and three with this other lady!

He'd been keeping up a front for NINE years!

moondog · 25/05/2005 14:39

Bizarre tale...
Nowt as queer as folk eh?

puska · 25/05/2005 14:39

not sure if it counts as business trip but my dh is away for 6 months - i'm a forces widow - i'm hating every minute of it too

Niddlynono · 25/05/2005 14:40

I think about two months is the longest but for about 3 years DH (or DP as he was then) spent more than 6 months of the year abroad.

Since DS was born though, new career and although he works longer hours and more days he comes home every night.

Fio2 · 25/05/2005 14:40

hurrah, justice!

emmamama · 25/05/2005 14:40

He was home for Christmas, but what if he's really clever and has a family in a country where they don't celebrate Christmas?

expatinscotland · 25/05/2005 14:40

When Mike told me I thought about how you always read about people like that in newspapers and magazines, but I'd never actually met someone that happened to.

It really messed poor Mike up.

Flum · 25/05/2005 14:44

Blimey not surprised. I always joke that dp is going to see his other wife up north. who is abetter cook than me. Its his business partner and is a fat geezer, but you jnever know ....temptation

roisin · 25/05/2005 14:54

Longest my dh has been away was about a fortnight; may have actually only been 10 days I'm not sure.
He's away atm, and I got mixed up with the days and thought he was back today ... well actually I thought today was Thursday; I was very disappointed last night when I realised my mistake.

MoggyMummy · 25/05/2005 15:39

three weeks - it was hell. now we (ds and i) are going to travel with him to san diego for 4 weeks every quarter. luckily i work for the same company so it works out well

14 weeks at police training at Bruche just after I'd had ds 2
12 months at Police staff training college at Bramshill (coming home at weekends)
currently away during the week until next July when he retires [smle]

mcmudda · 25/05/2005 16:29

one week - that was tooooooo long and he missed ds' first steps - although he was on the phone at the time which was a nice coincidence. I hate it when he goes away.

Chandra · 25/05/2005 16:37

Well... ahem... I was away for 9 months. though he came to visit me on Christmas and Easter

I did also left for a 3 months course after that but kept coming home at the weekends.

That all was pre baby, of course...

The longest he has been away is probably 3 weeks but he used to go away at least every three weeks.

suedonim · 25/05/2005 16:58

Three months when he was working in the Far East, then several spells of 6mths when he came home once a month. Also he worked offshore for 13yrs. So, really, we've only be married for half the time we claim on paper!

happymerryberries · 25/05/2005 17:08

About 4.5 -5 months, can't remember the exact amount. And has done a lot of 3-4 weeks away. Away for at least a half of the year, but you expect this in the forces....still a PITA though. We all hate it.

jessicasmummy · 25/05/2005 17:11

6 months pre dd

4 weeks post dd

DH is Army tho....

sammac · 25/05/2005 17:19

3 months in Korea just before dd was 2. Done a few month-long trips since then. He is away every week for at least one night, sometimes more. Sometimes overseas, but mostly down south. I hate it, but nothing I can do( but I can get on here without complaints, haha)

10 days is probably the longest continuous spell but we lived in different countries for a month when ds was 3 and I was 6 months pg and he came back to UK at weekends. atm he is away 2/3 nights every couple of weeks - he went early Sunday and is due back late tonight for example - part of the reason for moving back to UK.

sammac · 26/05/2005 07:31

Hausfrau he was in Putang, right down the south, at a naval base. He's not in the Navy, but works for a supplier of optical equipment- think periscopes/radar/night sights.
