Dog Poo - how to discourage it ?

Just outside my house on the pavement, I constantly keep finding dog mess. Its starting to irritate me - esp as yesterday one had been deposited right outside my front gate. I hate it being there as I don't want DD (or myself or DH for that matter) to tread in it. I never see the culprit dog owner either.

Anyone got any ideas if I can put something down that can discourage it?

I'd have them put down, filthy beasts (the owners not the dogs). I confronted a man last week. I watched his alsation deposit a huge turd in the park. He also watched and left it there where my child plays. A few minutes later the owner got into conversation with an old couple who were admiring his pedigree dog. I went up to him and interrupted the conversation with "Your dog has gone ot the toilet right over there, why dont you clean it up? Our children play on that grass" He was embarrassed and rightly so. MAybe he will clean up next time. I wouldnt dream of leaving ds pooey nappies around for others to see/step in.

You're brave, bunny2. Wish I was. Things always turn ugly when I get assertive.

Droile, yes the French have got lots of dogs, they also have pavements covered in dog poo. It's much, much worse than here in my experience. In Paris they have specially customised motorbikes to clean up the dog poo (nicknamed motocrottes). I have never seen special dog poo bins in French parks like you see here.

Having known dog owners who have trained their dogs to poo in one spot in the garden I think owners who think it's OK not to clean up the disgusting mess, totally intolerable. It's POO for goodness sake! I bet they clear it up from their own garden. They probably throw litter too. GRRRRRRR

Possibly even steal grapes from supermarkets

It's another case of "it's not myyyyy park/pavement" (in a Ben Elton stlye).

"a man with a van" came and took the pants and socks away,8 days later,my council must be the most efficient of all
still lots of new dog poos on the way to school

Metrobaby · 13/05/2003 10:00

I personally think that the dog owners who leave their dog poo without clearing it up hate the stuff as much as we do. I mean it can't be v nice carrying a bag of dog turd, so they leave it there as it easier.

The whole act strikes me as rather selfish tbh.

Will go and look for the dog and cat repellant at B&Q - although chilli powder is easier and cheaper it will get washed away with rain and I hate any sort of angry confrontation with the dog owner. I admire those of you who have confronted the owners nonetheless !

i wish there was something we could do to highlight what a problem this is - why should we have to watch out for dog poo on the pavement when we are walking our children to school - i am forever telling my DS to watch where he is stepping - maybe mumsnet can start a campaign to make dog owners more responsible!!!

eli · 13/05/2003 10:51

As a dog-owner - and I hope a responsible one - it infuriates me if people do not clear up after their pets. I always carry extra poo bags in my pocket. If i see an owner not clearing up i just ask them as sweetly (!) as possible if they would like a bag, adding how embarrassing and annoying it is to forget them. It does work becuase it is not confrontational. PS. I do object, however, to clearing up after the cats that come into my garden!

jodee · 13/05/2003 18:05

Oooooh, I just passed the woman who lives up the with elderly, decripit dog shamelessly letting it poo on the pavement in the adjacent street and leaving it there - I wish I'd had the guts to have a go but I know she's Greek and very fiery!

jodee · 13/05/2003 18:05

tut, that should be 'up the road' ...

Clarinet60 · 14/05/2003 14:34

That's a good idea, eli. I think I might carry an odd plastic bag or two to give out next time. It avoids an angry confrontation, but makes the point and it's better than just putting up with it. (not that I'm anal, or anything.......)

i know some one who printed posters she was so angry and posted them on the walls of the areae where it took place

Rhubarb · 14/05/2003 22:16

Yeah, that was me! My dd and her friends were playing out the back and one of them had stood in dog poo. We spent ages cleaning it off her shoes and when I went in the house I noticed some on the carpet, then over some of dd's toys, and leading into the front room - another friend had stepped in it without us realising it and had spread it all over the house! I was nearly throwing up at the end of all the cleaning I had to do. I was soooooo disgusted and angry that I printed posters to put up at the back saying something along the lines of "If I catch your dog fouling this area you can be sure I will report you to the Dog Warden" and I also put a bit about dog poo being disgusting and dangerous for small kids. I also tidied the backs up a bit so that there were no untidy grass verges for them to hide their dog poo in. It did work.

I also wrote to the council asking them to erect a dog fouling notice in the backs, but have had no reply which is fairly typical.

Clarinet60 · 15/05/2003 10:03

well done rhubarb. Yeuch!

jinna · 15/05/2003 11:04

well done Rhubarb - i also wrote to the council to complain about the dogs in the local playground - there was not only the problem of dog poo but also children who were getting scared of dogs which were off the lead - i got a reply - 'we will look in to it!!' - maybe if 'they stepped into it' they would actually do something

Metrobaby · 15/05/2003 12:07

It always makes me so sad too that I can't enjoy some of the nice green open fields around our area with dd. They are constantly used to exercise dogs (which I don't have a problem with), but also used as extentsive dog dumping grounds - despite dog poo bins and signs.

I also get mad about this as I think these green fields are for the benefit of everyone -yet in reality it seems it is for the benefit of dog owners who don't care

Well done to those of you who have complained to their council.

My Mum spent years campaining about this topic. we used to live on a close that had a green, quite a large one, and in the days when you could let your kid out for hours before tea time!, all the kids on the street would play there. However it was also popular with people, who lived in the surrounding strrets, to come and walk their dogs. If a child had fallen over in the poo, got it on their hands , rubbed their eyes, apparently it can cause blindness, so my Mum wrote letter after letter eventually getting sent signs and stickers etc prohibiting anyone to let their dog off the lead and foul the area.
Anyone with a dog should be picking it up these days.
Get writing, ask for stickers you put on lamposts, and one of thoose bins especailly for owners to put their dogs mess in (you get them in parks usually).

Rhubarb · 15/05/2003 15:08

How about getting a petition together? If it's annoying you then it is probably annoying your neighbours too. You could petition for more dog-fouling bins and signs to be put up, and for more dog wardens to patrol the areas. Also, write to your local councillor and MP and tell them of the response you have had from your council so far.

Personally I'd be tempted to rub the dog-owner's noses in it!
