My DD is going to a "taster" session next week to see if she wants to start lessons. Anyone else do Taekwondo? Especially girls? I don't know anything about it....

No, but ds1 has recently started karate and is loving it. He just passed his first grading (exam) last week for a new belt and is so proud of himself. It's helping him massively with confidence. There are a few girls in the group who look like they enjoy it too. I know it's not quite the same, but just thought I'd answer your post.

DD (8) does Karate and loves it

Cheers Aero - thanks. Not being a martial arts kind of person myself (!) I don't know how to explain it to her. I'm keen for her to learn some kind of martial arts (or at least give it a go) and I saw someone today who runs a class locally so we are going along to check it out.

Hee-yaaaaaa
(you can imagine the karate chop I just demonstrated!)

School my two go to (boys & girls) does a tae kwon do after-school club which is hugely popular. I suspect the pull may be the charismatic teacher more than anything, but still I think it's done my very very scatty physically unco-ordinated 6yo ds a great deal of good. But possibly anything similarly structured (yoga?) and well-taught would be equally good - so I guess the teacher is key.

The classes do tend to be more boys than girls but the appeal ought to be the same - it's all about learning precise moves - no fighting stuff in our club.

I don't do taekwondo, but I do Aikido, which is very good for us girls, as it uses the opponents body weight against them, as a martial art its one of the best! and is mainly defence, as its all about deflection and re distribution of weight to get the opponent where you want. So if Taekwondo isn't her thing, this might be worth considering, as Taekwondo is more of a hard hitting contact sport (although I do know a female 3rd Dan in it, so if punching is your thing, it can be done!)

KBear · 22/05/2005 08:43

Frizbe, not sure she needs a hard hitting contact sport - that's put me off a bit! I don't know what to expect really so I suppose we'll go along and see if we think it's a good idea.

(Am I the only mum who thinks doing some kind of martial art will help protect my DD when she's out in the world without her non-martial-arting mum to protect her - or am I over hopeful?!)

No kbear, your doing the right thing! I only started last year after the birth of dd, and I must say, I don't know why on earth I didn't do it sooner, its great, the people are really friendly, good social scene at our dojo! so lots of new mates as well as getting very fit and learning how to defende myself against attack, really can't express how much I wish I'd done it sooner! The best thing you can do is let her try it and see, as she's only little, stuff is watered down, obviously, but the self confidence it will teach her alone will be of eternal use to her
But if its not for her, try another branch, there are that many martial arts out there, one is bound to be the right one for her!

Thanks Frizbe - the lady who runs it seems really nice and its a family run business. And you're right about the self-confidence thing. I might give it a go myself! Thanks for all your advice.
