What do you get from mumsnet?

Just wondered what people got from mumsnet.

Mumsnet has been a big source of comfort while I came through my final stages of PND and also when I thought I was a bad mother, turned out that what I was doing/did was normal.

I have made some good friends here as well, and when I am feeling down there is always someone here to cheer you up and make you laugh.

I tend to look here before I have even looked at my emails.

From mumsnet I get:
Good advice and lots of different viewpoints/solutions to problems
A laugh, often
Friendships - both virtual and off board
Intelligent conversation
News - I often don't buy a paper or watch tv but may get snippets from here
And I agree with susanmt, I live in the country and it makes me feel less isolated socially. This site is wonderful, completely agree.

I'm more of a 'reader' than a 'poster', I go on at work every lunchtime and look in 'last day search' and print off everything that appeals, and have a good read with my meagre fayre! when I hae asked questions they have been answered brilliantly by people, esp what were the names of the banana splits! Do occasionally see something that makes me rush home and get on the computer to post but as I don't have unlimited access to a computer I don't tend to join in with the big chats and sometimes really feel sorry for myself cos I can't sob sob. Everyone does seem really nice tho'. some people have really sharp wits and I envy them to bits.

I love the advice and the feeling that I am not the only one experiencing problems or even highs!

Funny threads are a laugh even if I cant understand most of the abbreviations.

Plus I am a nosey person so love hearing about other people!

Hughsie · 07/05/2003 16:46

Inquisitive not nosey!

I love the threads where people compare notes on their lifestyles (pairs of shoes, who sleeps where in the bed etc) - its the cyberequivalent of looking in other people's shopping trolleys!! (nosey? moi?)
The controversial political debates usually depress me too much (I do have strong views which is why I generally refrain from comment) but I really learn from the discussions about things I've never given much thought to before (e.g. home ed).
Generally just the insights into different perspectives and ways of living. Oh and all the practical help of course. And the laughs...and feeling like there are lots of people out there who think like me (and lots who don't of course, but that's interesting too!)

mmm - I wish I could keep up the pretence of being a galmorous adventuress, but actually dirty nappies and baby vom are the same where ever you are (along I wish Annabell karmel had visited our local bazaar, then some of her recipes might be of some use....)

ps No Amazon, just a mum and a friend who are really good on sticking books and videos in the post, so if I start a thread on a programme 2 months after everyone else has forgotton it, you'll know why!!!!

whoops, spelling mistakes look worse when they are there twice! That should be "although" Annabell etc.....

mmm · 08/05/2003 12:37

I know, but at least the vomit was made with exotic ingredients!

happyspider · 08/05/2003 21:48

the freedom to talk about my expanding boobs, bum and waistline, without forgetting varicose veins, larger feet, body fluids and tearing of intimate parts... and nobody's thinking of me as a sad ageing old lady

I get an increasing phone bill that's for sure! I'm technically not allowed to be here at the moment, until we get Bradband. But hey ho - DH is in Germany! Yah boo sucks to him...

I really love the advice, although I feel slightly in "the red" for the amount I've taken, compared to the amount I've given.

And the Yurt of course. I'm just heading back there now for my glass of Chardonnay...

snickers · 08/05/2003 21:59

BROADband that is - although, given that he was in the Yurt recently, perhaps we should be installing bradband instead! LOL

Naughtynoonoo · 08/05/2003 22:13

non judgemental friends, lots of valuable advice and lots of laughs - I am deliberating whether to get the weights as I too suffer from a pelvic floor, which doesn't help when I crack up from some of the messages I read on here. Its such a nice feeling that everybody is welcome here and everyones views are welcome, long may mumsnet reign!
