We were lucky. My Dad worked in the Civil Service and was able to take nearly all his holidays at once. We were taken out of school early in June and went away for a month driving across Europe in a camper van. Sometimes we encorporated hiring a villa in Spain and would stay there for 2 weeks. It was brilliant although it wasn't expensive as camping is cheap on the continent and we hardly ever ate out. My mum used to cook a great meal on the little stove in the campervan. Also us kids didn't get entertained in the way many expect nowadays. We were quite happy with the playparks on the campsites and the beach. In fact there were no organised activities for the kids in those days and we used to just tag along with the adults and go to the bar and of course no-one bats an eyelid about taking kids into bars in France/Spain. Try doing that here if it's after 6pm or if you aren't actually having a meal or sitting in some segregated area. Sigh. Now I have kids of my own we still go to Spain and although things have changed a lot they are still very child-friendly.

from 4 till about 8 I went with my family to a cottage near Skelwith Bridge in the Lake District, where we walked, talked, played with our toys, played cards, had pub lunches (and my mum paid no rent hardly I later found out) very very good times for us all and my mum and dad were both together so very nice for us all....later caravaning in Brigham near Driffield, Scarborough and holidays in Mallorca when we were 16......and a static caravan in Skelwith one year with 3 of us in one room and just playing with cousins all the time...

After stayin near to home in St Andrews and Girvan, my parents got a bit more daring, and we went to Isle of Man, followed by Cornwall. Went to Crantock, outside Newquay for a few years, before actually staying in Newquay itself. We used to leave the day before cos it took so long and stop off en-route overnight. Motorway stopped around Birmingham then.

Lovely memories of miles of sand, always sunny, ploughman's lunches and pasties.

We went back when dd was 2, for our holidays, and still love Cornwall.
