Have had an invite to a grand sounding 40th birthday party with an "indian Summer" theme. Want to look slim, sophisticated, sexy etc as DH ex longterm GF (that I have managed to avoid meeting for 13yrs) will be there. However short of total body rebuild/plastic surgery will have to settle for ok Thought about Sari but I cant go without a bra so cant see that working, I think the punjabi style trouser suit would make me look too dumpy as Im short. Anyone seen anything that would fit the bill? Kids going too, If I go to an asian clothes shop will I be able to buy a little sari and small suits and are they expensive?

I thought you wore short cropped T shirt type tops under saris so a bra shouldn't be a problem. I don't think bog standard saris are overly expensive but I guess that depends on your idea of expensive

Have a look on Ebay actually - you might get an idea there. There are sometimes saris on offer.

hi miggy - you wear a saree top with a saree- its like a crop top
standard sarees are not expensive - and a simple suit would be around £50 to £80
the suits in fashion now tend to have short tops and trousers so even if you are short (like me) they look good
try out some indian shops i think you will be surprised
also do you know how to put on a saree?

for the kids in some shops you can buy small suits and outfits for boys too

Hi miggy, I got married in a sari and it was 3 months after ds was born so I was not slim, not that I am now either! I'd say they're very flattering and cover all number of sins. There's a thread about dressing up clothes somewhere on mumsnet where I posted a link about how to put on a sari so have a look for that if you think you might wear one. Agree, you don't have to wear a bra, the tops that go underneath hold you up quite well. Hope you find a glam look whatever you decide to go for.

I got lots of gorgeous Indian clothes from a charity shop for the dressing up box. Do you do the charity shops?

whymummy · 06/05/2003 07:57

how about a long white tunic and white troussers, flip flops and toe rings?

WideWebWitch · 06/05/2003 09:01

If you do decide to go with a sari there's a thread here with some useful cheap places to get one or the fabric, if you're in or near London.

mmm · 06/05/2003 13:01

hahaha wickedwaterwitch! a thread ! to go with the sari!

miggy · 06/05/2003 14:16

Thanks for all the advice. Had forgotten about the little top under the sari- that would cover bra straps. Will chc out stockists and let you know. thanks for link WWW

I'm with Whymummy's suggestion, a tunic with trousers is a fab look and very now. And you can Henna tatoo your hands and feet. Have you tried Monsoon? Thats where I get my ethnic fix.

Miggy, When is the party? if you are not a standard size, most shops that sell saris will also, for a small additional cost, get you a matching 'undersari blouse' made-to-measure'. You will, of course, need a bit more time for this than an off the peg item.

Also, if you can make it to the shops on weekdays rather than the weekend, the staff will have more time (and inclination) to help you find an outfit to suit you and show you how it is supposed to be worn.

Good luck and enjoy the party!

Party is july so lots of time. will take a day in the week pos to go to east london (can get a pie and mash fix too )
Bunny2- I love monsoon too but so wish they would do petite range. I'm 5ft1 and most of their clothes are miles too long and often have hem details that really limit alteration potential. Also cannot visit too often due to temptation to buy every single outfit in age 4-5 for DD.

Monsoon does do a petite range (much to my disgust). Well, they used to... Now I think of it I'm not sure I've seen it recently.

Miggy, just another point to bear in mind - a lot of shops selling salwaar khameez will offer free or reasonably priced alterations - so don't just think that the clothes are too big without asking about having things shortened (I should know as i am shorter than you!).
