Where to live in Edinburgh?

Blu · 11/05/2005 23:30

No, not me, but a friend.
She needs to re-locate, work in the city centre. Has 2 small children, and I guess will look for a 4 bed house (so we can visit) with garden. And good primary school. They are 'bohemian professionals', enjoy access to the great outdoors, but also the odd wine bar. They are used to a gritty area of London, but would like a freindly neighbourhood.
Any ideas?

fimbo, dalgety bay is not a good place to direct someone too! there are nicer places nearby (fume)

morningside and bruntsfield are definitely the nicest parts. stockbridge too, although thats a little cramped i think. portobello is ok, used to live there, but it gets a lot of trouble from nearby not so nice places. (had the police outside the pub i lived above every night)

liberton is nice too, and is a bit nearer the city centre than morningside or bruntsfield, which can be a bit studenty

leith is also fab now it has undergone a major redo. if i was to move back to edin i would live in leith. brilliant nightlife, restaurants, mixture of townhouses that are really old but have been looked after and new modern flats/penthouse thingys

Nailpolish
We live in the Leith Links area and love it! It is loaded with lots of amenities and fun places to visit. Plus, Ocean Terminal shopping centre - with free covered parking - is just down the road.

nailpolish · 12/05/2005 15:39

oh expat i am so

do you go to the lighthouse? had many a drunken hilarious night out there! (sigh)

nailpolish · 12/05/2005 15:40

blu, for properties the ESPC website cant be beaten

expatinscotland · 12/05/2005 15:46

Haven't been in the Lighthouse, but my sister and BIL did last time they were here and said it was cheap drinks all around. They came home spannered!

Did get to stay in Hotel Malmaison, however, last time my folks were across and treated us to a romantic, child-free night. LOVELY place with fab brunch.

Ouch at the offers over . It's 6 years since I lived in Edinburgh, I guess I'm pretty out of touch with the market....

sarahinphuket · 12/05/2005 16:24

Hi chonky how are you?

wow it would be great to go back to Edinburgh.......whereabouts would you live this time? I miss it there!

hope you are well

Anywhere is within easy commuting distance of the city centre. The places withing 2 or 3 miles are either horrendously expensive, or lacking a villagy feel or grotty. There are tons of places that were developed in the 60s and 70s with wide streets, big gardens and well-built houses, but they won't necessarily ahve their own neighbourhood shops, restaurants and pubs.

Don't know what somewhere like Colinton is like these days, but worth a look. Liberton (the bits closest to Newington) is nice. Portobello is looking very run-down.

I grew up in Musselburgh, which is 6 miles east of the centre. It has a bit of everything.

If I had the funds, I'd go for Stockbridge or Morningside - without a doubt.

chonky · 12/05/2005 16:32

Hah - I knew a thread with edinburgh in the title would draw you out Sarahinphuket !

Dunno really, it's just a daydream at the moment. I just think that we may be better off in Edinburgh in the long run for dd (a nice main door flat with no stairs), and also for our jobs.
As for area, hhhmmmm.....I still have a soft spot for Newington, but the New Town/ Bruntsfield/ Trinity/ Comely Bank areas are all really tempting (although not at 50% over 'offers over' price). Gah, why did I ever sell my flat???

How's life with you? You planning to be around this summer at all?

expatinscotland · 12/05/2005 16:32

Shut up, Ameriscot ! Stockbridge has no place to park and Morningside is full of . . . no, I can't go there .

sarahinphuket · 12/05/2005 16:45

Yep Newington is great..........but maybe too studenty now that we are all grown up and responsible!!

I love Morningside and Bruntsfield, have to say. A friend of mine recently bought a house in Morningside. My ex-flatmate used to have a flat in Dalry that was nice too, but very small.

Yep I'll be back for the whole of July with DD....not sure if I'll be able to get down south (except for a family visit in Peterborough) though. Have had pleas so far to go to Ed, London, Newcastle, Yorkshire and Glasgow. Hmmmmmm

will email you soon

tamum · 12/05/2005 17:26

Is Liberton really closer to the centre than Bruntsfield? I would have thought it was twice as far, but maybe it depends on where in the centre Portobello definitely worth a look, but the high schools are better around Morningside/Grange and so on.

Anyway, as far as offers over goes it varies enormously at the moment. One friend says that the market is quite slow, but other friends just sold their flat in Marchmont. It was offers over £325 K and went for £445 K

Ameriscot2005 · 12/05/2005 17:51

Yes, Liberton is at least twice as far from the centre as Bruntsfield.
