We lived in Sandringham when we were in Oz. Loved it. We were looking at going back and that would be our first choice although we'd also consider Hampton or Brighton.

We lived between this house and the sea (see map included on details). Five mins walk from the centre and train station; 25 mins by train into the city; two mins from the beach. Great places to eat, butcher, fishmonger, supermarket, library, etc. 5-10 mins drive from big shopping mall, ??Southlands??. Nice schools too, I think although DD was only at Kinder, 11 hours per week.

Hi SueW - I second your choice of Sandringham - just lovely

How long have you been o/s?

DH grew up in Adelaide and I have visited it. It feels provincial in comparison with Sydney, but I liked it - with a gentle pace of life, many attractive Victorian houses and public buildings in the centre and near some good beaches. The Adelaide Hills are also a beautiful area to live. DH also has relatives living on the North Shore in Sydney - large houses, near beaches - and you might like to investigate that.

when we moved over 9 months ago ds2 was 11 months so no worries there and ds1 3.4 and tbh he did have some problems, once the novelty had worn off and before all our stuff arrived he became very rude and rough with strange kids in playgrounds and it was all a bit stressful, but once his familar toys arrived and he realised that we were staying he was great

If youwant to go int to depth then feel free CAT me

how old are youkids?

koalabear · 11/05/2005 16:22

ah Adelaide - tis where i grew up too - it's my best and favourite place - too big for a town, to small for a city, a great place to retire or bring up children

if Adelaide is an option, let me know - I think I know EVERY suburb

OldieMum · 11/05/2005 16:25

Yay for Adelaide. Where did you grow up? DH grew up in Somerton.

DaddyCool · 11/05/2005 16:28

adelaide was nice and (daddycool factoid) it's actually considered 'rural' by immigration and you need 10 less points on your skills migration application as long as you agree to live and work there for something like three years (or somthing).

koalabear · 11/05/2005 16:30

grew up in country near mount barker, then city near Belair (Adelaide Hills), then lived inner city in North Adelaide and Parkside as adult - ahhhh

also loved Norwood, Brighton, Victor Harbour, Harndorf, Birdwood .....

OldieMum · 11/05/2005 16:31

When we were last in Adelaide, we went out to a restaurant for dinner with friends of his. As the evening progressed, a surprisingly large number of his old friends turned up (he left there in 1975), quite by chance. It really is a small place.

OldieMum · 11/05/2005 16:32

DH learned to sail at Brighton Yacht club - aaah!

stripey · 11/05/2005 16:32

Dh is Australian and we lived in Sydney for 3 years. The Northern beach areas are fab but no trains (only buses) and very expensive.

A lot depends on what kind of work you will do for instance I think there are more big companies in Sydney although Melbourne has quite a few too but in Brisbane job opportunities would be limited. Then again if you were say a Teacher you could probably work in any part. If commuting is a requirement you should definitely check out transport links as quite a few parts of Sydney have no train services.

When we were there (5 years ago now) I am pretty sure at least one of you had to be a citizen to purchase property. Permanent Residents needed permission from the Government. Maybe renting would be a good start so you can check out the area in person. From what I remember Bankstown and Liverpool were almost no go areas but a lot could have changed since then.

suzywong · 11/05/2005 16:34

isn't Mt Barker WA?

koalabear · 11/05/2005 16:38

Also a Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills

DaddyCool · 11/05/2005 16:49

i was in adelaide for the grand prix in 1996(?). i was too drunk to remember very much but it seemed nice

koalabear · 11/05/2005 16:50

i hosted for my company at that grand prix - you weren't in a hospitality tent were you? were you the one with the moose horns?

DaddyCool · 11/05/2005 16:53

no (but i wish i was...)and i certainly wasn't in a hospitality tent. i think i had about -$50 to my name at that point. i was backpacking and the grand prix was the last stop before i needed to find work again.

koalabear · 11/05/2005 16:55

weird - thinking about the movie "Six degrees of separation" - i wonder how many people on mnet actually know each other through various people .... sorry, late in day, tired and mind wanderin ....

DaddyCool · 11/05/2005 16:56

i've thought the same thing. you're not weird. i posted a thread months ago asking if anyone had been backpacking at the same time and made clear where i had been and when but no one responded. we met soooo many people, most of them british.

we saw one of the girls dw travelled with, advertising one of those cheesy cash back savings deals in 'whats on telly' about a year ago!

SueW · 11/05/2005 20:45

koalabear - we did love Sandringham but never could get St Kilda - I think we were too grown up iyswim!!! We also spent some time in S Yarra but it's not so family/beachy IMO.

DH is Kiwi - he left NZ in 89. He got a job in Melbourne in 2000 and we lived there for almost a year before returning to the UK. Looking back, we onlyt came back because we'd originally planned to and when his contract finished there wasn't anything to stop us staying, tbh. We just didn't think hard enough about it. Now I spend a lot of time wishing we were back there - I''ve never felt so 'at home' when away.

Six degrees of separation - we have lots of great stories about that. Best one was DH working for Royal Mail in Leeds. Having a smoke and chatting to one of the directors who said he'd met a crazy Kiwi once in Alberta, Canada. Oh really, said DH, my uncle did a spell at uni in Alberta. Yep, one and the same.

noddyholder · 11/05/2005 21:14

I was backpacking in Australia 1989 1990 I know I am so old!I worked in racquels spanish deli in sydney anyone know it?

eidsvold · 12/05/2005 00:14

Lots of job opportunities in Brisbane and QLD - massive growth predicted for the next few years - lots of southerners are moving north for lifestyle and work changes!!

eidsvold · 12/05/2005 00:16

six degrees and all.... was chatting about the last teaching job I had before I went to the Uk to work - very small dot on the map in country QLD - which is such a large area- turns out one of the guys I was chatting with had also lived in said town when he was backpacking through Aus - he spent a few months there picking fruit. So none of my aussie friends knew where this place was but this guy from the Isle of Man knew exactly what I was talking about.
