How many pairs of shoes do you have?

Hilary · 01/05/2003 16:54

If my memory serves me correctly, I have 3 pairs of boots, 1 ankle length, 1 knee length and 1 broken. 1 pair of trainers, 2 pairs of sandals, one broken. 1 pair of brown shoes with a small heel which neither I nor dh like. My wedding shoes which I keep for sentimental reasons and would never wear. 1 pair of walking boots. One pair of brown lace up shoes I haven't worn for about 4 years.

Is this excessive? My husband calls me Imelda and says I have loads of shoes but I'm sure I see people around me in far more pairs of shoes than that. And so many times, I don't seem to have any shoes to wear...

Please tell me you have more than this!

2 pair black boots, 1 pair trainers, 2 pair black court shoes, 1 pair black strappy sandals, 1 pair more full black sandals, 1 pair black mules, 1 pair high heeled black strappy glittery black shoes,2 pair brown sandals, 1 pair high heeled beige strappy shoes, 1 pair flat black shoes, 1 pair toe tectors, 1 pair wellies, 1 pair slippers.
Never realised I had so many - and too much black!
How many match shoes and handbags?

scoobysnax · 02/05/2003 10:50

Morrocco, the same thing happened to me. Before I was pregnant I had stacks of shoes and about 40 matching underwear sets. After my baby NONE of them fit me. Oh yes, and none of my clothes fit me either.
Somehow I in just 3 years I have managed to build up to a shoe collection of 5 pairs of boots, 2 pairs of sandals, 4 pairs of shoes,1 pair of trainers and some wellies.
I think that the right pair of shoes can make or break an outfit so I wish I had more pairs...although come to think of it I don't have as many outfits as I currently have shoes...

happydays · 02/05/2003 10:53

Must confess to being a shoe-maniac. I have 4 pairs of boots, 3 pairs of runners, 5 sandals, and 7 pairs of work shoes, 4 pairs of slippers.

Crunchie · 02/05/2003 13:00

Blimey you lot are so unlike Imelda it's untrue. I couldn't have thought it possible that anyone would have less shoes than me, and I have at least 40 pairs!! Lets see if I can remember

5 pairs trainers (2 exclusively for the gym)
2 knee high black boots (one clumpy one high)
6 ankle length black books (various heights/styles)
pair blight orange boots
black cowboy boots
stilletto cowboy boots
riding boots
DM ankle boots
walking boots
3 pairs strappy black sandals
pair gold strappy sandals
2 pairs pink 'schol?' type mules
2 pairs black flat sandals
pair camper sandals
rainbow stilettos
'snakeskin' mules
camper daisy mules
purple mules
Black wedge heeled mules
back hush puppy sandals
3 or 4 balck 'court' shoes (never wear them)
2 black 'maryjanes' (one high, one flat)
pink seqined sandals
pink embroidered sandals
black loafers
baseball boots
wellies
school type pumps

Wow that's 45 that I can remember off the top of my head sitting at work and not looking.

I am missing a pair of pink cowboy boots, I can see a real hole for them. Also a pair of deck shoes/sandals for sailing. I also need a pair of 'neutral' sandals, with a high heel, perhaps a wedgie pair.

I just want to say in my defense, my cowboy boots are at least 12 yrs old and still get worn all teh time, and now I've got kids I only buy one pair of boots a year (or maybe 2) and perhaps one other pair per season (in total 4 - 5 pairs a year). I really don't think this is excessive, perhaps I should chuck them, but shoes are the one thing that fit whatever the weight!!

HZL · 02/05/2003 13:25

OK, here goes...

1 pair Timberlands
1 pair walking boots
1 pair ski boots (do these count?)
2 pairs trainers (1 for gym/running, 1 for bumming around in)
2 pairs black ankle boots
1 pair brown ankle boots
1 pair black knee boots
2 pairs black loafer-style for work
1 pair black slingbacks for work
1 pair navy slingbacks (worn once for a wedding, but they're from LK Bennet, so can't bear to part with them)
1 pair black evening shoes
1 pair backless loafers
1 pair flat strappy sandals (never worn as I hate my toes/feet, but every year swear that this will be the year I pamper my feet and paint my nails)
1 pair deck shoes (never worn, but I hang onto them 'just in case' - why???)
1 pair black backless flat things (make my feet look like Minnie Mouse, but who cares)
1 pair Birkenstocks (Dh hates them, but they're soooo comfy!)

And reading this thread has just inspired me to chuck out a further four pairs that aren't listed here. I'm amazed at the number I have, particularly when I only wear about three pairs consistently. I blame my shoe thing on the fact that I have had size 8 feet since I was ten. Being taken to the shoe shop and being shown one pair/one colour/one style, take it or leave it has, I'm sure, contributed to this. Perhaps its time I got over it!

SamboM · 02/05/2003 13:54

Oh my god, where do you all keep all of these shoes?

I have

One pair of trainers
2 pairs of glam sandals
1 pair of smart heeled shoes
2 pairs of boots
1 pair of wellies
1 pair of slippers
1 pair wedding shoes

And i still have probs finding somewhere to keep them!

Hilary · 02/05/2003 13:57

Wait for this injustice... I showed dh this thread to prove that I don't have more shoes than other women and it caused him to count up his shoes and he has 7 pairs, one pair more than me!

I've only just looked at this thread - and I can't believe that you all have so many - yes, you are all worthy of the 'Imelda' tag, in my view.

I've got one pair of boots, 2 pairs of shoes (one black, one brown) and a pair of sandals.

Am I not normal???? (apparently not) I feel
obliged to rush to the shoe shops this weekend to even up my score!!!

steppemum · 02/05/2003 14:11

susanmt - where do you buy shoes? I'm size 10 too. I used to buy them in Saxone tall girl. When it first opened in Oxford Street my Mum took me up there, I was 15 and wearing hideous granny shoes. I tried on ever pair in the shop, including many that I had no intention of buying. We were there for 3 hours, I thought I'd won the pools! (no lottery then) Since Saxone has been taken over by Barretts the tall girl is rubbish. Where do you go?
As to how many pairs...well I can think of 10 off the top of my head, non of which I need, because I have to wear fur lined boots for 6 months of the year!

Crunchie · 02/05/2003 14:44

Over my lunch break I managed to remember 5 more pairs!!!

Wedding shoes
Ski Boots
Flat black boats for when I was pg and my feet swelled up
pink strappy sandals
another pair of wedgies!!

The collection has built up over the past 10 yrs or so, and I rarely throw any out hence teh collection. They are all wearable, so I can't see the point of chucking them.

I think I need to start a new thread on who has the most black T-shirts!!

oxocube · 02/05/2003 15:22

Bloody hell Crunchie !!! I think I have 2 pairs of sandals which I never wear although they are nice, a pair of 'sandshoes' (they are too cheap even to be called trainers) and 2 pairs of boots. Oh and a pair of hideous flip flop things which I wear around the house and garden. Sad, sad

susanmt · 02/05/2003 15:54

steppemum - trainers etc I just buy mens of course. I get most of my girlie shoes from Evans, which has a reasonable range (as I have to go there for my clothes anyway I always have a look) and they also do a variety of widths in the large sizes. They are on line but I don't know if they deliver to the steppes (they do to the Outer Hebrides, but somehow it all seems a bit less wild and outlandish compared to you!)

Khara · 02/05/2003 22:20

1 pair shoes (black), recently purchased, after old pair fell apart (literally.)

1 pair black boots (worn most of the year, except in summer when even I admit they would look ridiculous.)

Oh, just remembered: 1 pair of brown shoes, bought to go with suit for friend's wedding. (Mum made me buy them, as black wouldn't go apparently!)

I hate shoes. They never fit, cause horrid blisters, and I can't wear heels or I fall over. If I find a pair that are comfortable I wear them till they rot.

Bozza · 06/05/2003 14:51

Remembered a pair of trainers and two more pairs of mules.

Anyway Hilary I think you have nicely got this one over on your DH.

prufrock · 06/05/2003 15:04

I think I should be ashamed of this, but I'm not.

When I got home I counted. I found 8 more pairs. I also realised I didn't have any that were the right colour pink to go with one of the outfits I bought on Saturday, so I bought a lovely pair of light pink suede mules from Kurt Geiger. And now I need some beige sandals as my only pair are completely flat, and they don't go with my other new dress for my holiday.

elliott · 06/05/2003 15:46

So prufrock, what is your monthly shoe budget?
I also get Imelda comments from DH (who buys so little in the way of clothes and shoes that I don't stand a chance really). Actually this thread has shattered my illusions that I have a modest collection of shoes - I see many of you have a lot fewer than me!
In terms of what I wear regularly:
1 pair walking boots
1 pair wellies
2 pairs trainers
3 pairs ankle boots
2 pairs work shoes
3 pairs sandals
Then probably about 5 pairs assorted old boots and shoes that I'll probably never wear again, and about 5 pairs 'smart' shoes worn about twice each but become so dated I always end up buying new for each wedding/interview/presentation.
eek, I've been rumbled...

steppemum · 07/05/2003 04:55

Thankd susanmt, I've bought some from Evans too, they tend to be a bit wide. I don't bother with mail order, just go on mad shopping sprees when I come home

Eve · 07/05/2003 08:59

I must have 40-50 pairs....but I do wear most of them, I wear different shoes every day to work, and always buy new shoes with a new outfit.

I do buy most of them when we go to Italy, last time I think I came home with 9 pairs. DH is not allowed to complain as my reasoning is, I need something to cheer me up if I have to stay with the Inlaws and visist all his realtives.

After the pregnancies and pram pushing with babies and toddlers, I have discovered heels again, and they feel great...if not somewhat impractical.
Nothing like a pair of heels, some new makeup and a new hair cut to begin to make you feel semi-good about yourself.
