OK, I need to paint my wooden sandpit with something to protect it. What is the bestthing to use?

Try yacht varnish, you can get it from B&Q

SoupDragon · 10/05/2005 15:36

I thought about yacht varnish but I've had problems with it peeling in the sun before.

One of those preservative things that soaks in instead of sealing?

SoupDragon · 10/05/2005 15:38

I'll have to go and stare blankly at the tins in B&Q I guess

even though it is a sandpit I covet and am not allowed to have in my own garden and I am therefore extremely jealous of you , yet I will still find out what the excellent, non-toxic, and non-stinky stuff dh and our neighbour painted our fence with last summer is called. It is wax-based and comes in several lovely shades. Will report back tomorrow. Once I have got over my attack of sandpit envy (am having to put up with vile turquoise plastic hippo that reminds me of bad holiday in France with ex-friends).

snigger

aha the tchibo sandpit - it's only flaw is that it comes as untreated wood. we used bog standard cuprinol wood preserving paint.

Marina · 10/05/2005 15:41

Oh that's IT then. Go to B & Q and fester there, you scaly gloater

SoupDragon · 10/05/2005 15:41

I mean "thank you very much, Marina, that is most kind." Obviously.

Um, OK then soupy. I'll ask dh tonight. He is a DIY things in tins fetishist so I will get TMI on it no doubt

Blu · 10/05/2005 15:42

Yeah, I hate those plastic sand-pits, marina, and a certain MN-er near me now has a nice wooden sand pit, too......
Aaaargh, sand pit envy!

SoupDragon · 10/05/2005 15:42

Clearly you don't understand Dragon very well.

OP posts:
bossykate · 10/05/2005 15:43

why are you not allowed to have one, marina?

Janh · 10/05/2005 15:44

We did our garden fence (roughcut) with stuff called Ducksback - it is sort of paint but seals pretty well and comes in several nice colours.

Also we have a very pretty blue garden shed (smooth planed) done in that outdoor paint stuff - can't remember the brand let alone the range.

Marina · 10/05/2005 15:44

More gloating from all over S London. Please stop it NOW bk and Soupy.

Marina · 10/05/2005 15:44

JanH, you angel. That's the stuff Soupdragon. It's great, isn't it!

Marina · 10/05/2005 15:45

bk, because we already allegedly have a "perfectly good one" in the form of said repulsive hippo. Men have no style and no taste.

bossykate · 10/05/2005 15:45

blu, you won't be envious when you see the crappy paint job dh did on it - this was after maintaining for hours that it didn't need it. mate, it's untreated pine. then said would be cheaper to buy a new one. yes, i should have just done it myself, but sometimes you have to make a stand.

SoupDragon · 10/05/2005 15:45

Thanks

If it makes you feel any better, I've not built mine yet because the instructions are only in German and Dutch. They're sending me the English version in the post...

Nicht War!

Marina · 10/05/2005 15:46

So can we all come round and scoff loudly in dh's hearing, bk, or would that be salt in the lash-stripes?

Janh · 10/05/2005 15:49

Oh, wow, had forgotten about casa colours!!!

Ducksback is lovely though and very satisfying to use.

Now will someone please put me out of my misery and remember the name of the pretty pastel garden paints that were all the rage a few years ago???

SoupDragon · 10/05/2005 15:49

I intend painting mine before I put it together. Without any male intervention from Mr Don't-Do-It-Youself Dragon.

bossykate · 10/05/2005 15:50

i will have to touch it up, i suppose. it was all obviously far too much effort. i'm afraid i find avoidable corner cutting very hard to bear.
