I was going to title this thread Bum Chums - thanks Jasper!!! but i thought it would be too confusing and although we might ensnare people onto the thread... who wondered over completely unknowing that the thread was actually all about naps... we might lose the people who actually do want to know about lovely Kissies, fuzzis, tots, ellas and what's the difference between a rikki and a rikka???!!

so at the behest of Girly... I present the new thread!!!!! .... please please don't let it fizzle out now!!!

and to talk nappies... mine are drying on the line outside and if it rains there will be hell to pay!!!! (dh a meteorologist and claimed it might rain so don't chance it with the naps... me? i ussually ignore what he says and i generally do the opposite... thus they are flapping about in the breeze as i type!!! )

Yippeeee! Minkis arrived today! They are gorgeous, can't wait to try them out.

Katherine · 12/06/2003 14:49

Demented - I just got my minki through too. Aren't they fab. Mine is zebra fleece outer with royal blue inner. Can't wait. I keep looking on her site at what she's got in stock and thinking I might just go for a couple more - but I really should wait and see if its a boy or a girl. Have you discovered wacky wraps yet? www.wackywraps.co.uk/

ninja · 12/06/2003 15:12

Katherine - I almost wish that you hadn'tshown me this - this is just what I've been looking for as I've decided that stuffbles aren't for me but I still want to show off (well it's fun and gets people interested). Has anyone used these? Are they good? I don't know if I can wait for the reply

Girly · 12/06/2003 15:18

Oooohhhh Katherine, that was sneaky, just when i thought I was taming my nappy addiction, those wacky wraps are fab!

Bobsmum · 12/06/2003 15:23

Oh Katherine - what have you done - you temptress! I'm trying to be all virtuous on the "down with disposables" thread saying how much money we're saving by using cloth - and you show me this! I'm such a hypocrite! :0
I have 10 wraps already and that's me being very restrained. Why have I not seen these before???

ninja · 12/06/2003 15:35

But emember - we can resell ur - so they don't cost that much in the longrun ....

ninja · 12/06/2003 15:36

we could if we could type properly!

Tissy · 12/06/2003 16:41

Talking of Minkis- look at rogues gallery . Mine is the one in pink, no idea why she's labelled as Danny in Denim, though!

ninja · 12/06/2003 16:47

Think that tehy must have corrected it Tissy!

Tissy · 12/06/2003 16:49

On my computer she's still labelled as Danny in Denim....strange!

KeepingMum · 17/06/2003 10:56

I bought a baby magazine yesterday and was very interested to read an advertising leaflet from the Nappy Information Service, basically it was all about how good disposables are for your baby and the environment! Have a look at their site (the NIS is basically all the disposable nappy manufacturers)
here I couldn't help but laugh at some of the arguments, I also thought it was a bit cynical to put the adverts out during Real Nappy Week. Do you think they are worried about how many people are using reusable nappies?

Enid · 17/06/2003 11:24

That site is repulsive! especially when you realise that its just propaganda for disposable manufacturers. I particularly like the way that they insinuate that the alternative to disposables are terries - no mention of the lovely shaped easy nappies that a lot of people use.

Bobsmum · 17/06/2003 12:32

Keeping Mum - horrible site!
I found it a while ago from a search engine. Dh wrote a fuming email to them picking them up on all their dubious "facts" - especially the ones about washable nappies costing about the same as disposables. Oh yeah and the environmental impact is "about the same" - um.. no.
Unsurprisingly we didn't get a reply.
I love the fuzzy pictures of toddlers feeding swans by a lake - ahhh- nappy disinformation service - talk about propaganda - running scared the lot of them - mwahahahah
Rant over.

eidsvold · 17/06/2003 13:44

have just recieved a 'recipe' for wipes - washable wipes that last forever according to sil...will post more later.

Oakmaiden · 17/06/2003 14:45

I liked the "really there is no difference in manufacture - both require resources and energy". Of course they do - the 20 terries nappies I purchased and used for my ds and will be using for child no 2 took no fewer resources to manufacture than the 5000 (I think was their figure)disposables I would otherwise have required for each child.

sigh

Philippat · 17/06/2003 15:19

has anyone ever ordered a snugwee? I'm feeling a tad out of my depth with all the options.

jamsy · 17/06/2003 15:24

Re - a more hands-off approach to poo-ey stains on tot-bots: Thanks for the suggestions about this and to follow up; the in-the-wash powder I got (actually Oxi-Vanish version) works very well thank you! My fingernails thank you too...

General crunchyness (asked about on another thread) is improved by an extra rinse - vinegar just made them smell evil.

KeepingMum · 17/06/2003 16:09

Oakmaiden, that was the claim that I thought was most dubious as well. Maybe in manufacturing terms a disposable and a reusable use similar resources but it is completely misleading to quote those figures and not mention how many of each type of nappy a child (or children if you use them on a whole family) would use in a life time.

I was almost going to write to the magazine and complain about the ethics of promoting this kind of rubbish, but reasoned that since a large proportion of the magazines income must come from nappy advertising they probably wouldn't be that sympathetic.

I will also not take any notice of anything I read by Dr Sarah Brewer and the other doctors who were fully endorsing everything written in the leaflet, whilst receiving a hefty cheque for doing so!

eidsvold · 18/06/2003 06:32

re making washable wipes/reusable wipes... here is a 'recipe' sent by sil - am trying it to see how it goes - I am hopingh might help with cutting down further on our disposable wipe consumption.

buy yourself some spontex wipes ( open weave) Soak them and wash them ( probably need to do this a couple of times to get them soft)

Cut them into about 8 pieces per wipe ( or however large you want them)

In a plastic wipes container mix the following

2 cups boiling water
approx 1 dessertspoon of almond oil ( or any carrier oil )
approx 2 dessertspoons of baby wash/shampoo

gradually add the wipes. You will have to squish down the last few to soak up the mixture - be careful it is hot!!

Then use and soak/wash with your nappies. Or in a normal wash after a quick rinse. My sil has used them since not long after my niece was born - 12 months old now and not a problem with nappy rash.
