which fortunately she rejected (though she may have eaten one bit) and dh and the dog hoovered up the rest

Do you think I am in line for an evening of puking? It was a waitrose fresh cod & parsley fishcake with a use by date of 1 May.

Unlikely, I'd think, honey.

HRHDuchessofPeahead · 03/05/2005 19:47

no! it is only 3 may. I would have used it too.....

CountessDracula · 03/05/2005 19:47

Really?

I am mad paranoid person who chucks out anything past it's use by if it is fish or meat.

I think they're pretty careful and err on the side of caution with use-by dates with things.

One (possible) bit of just past use-by is unlikely to cause any problems.

HRHDuchessofPeahead · 03/05/2005 19:48

yes. if there is no visible mould and it smells OK then it gets eaten around here...

the smell is key though. but 2 days is nothing!

Tissy · 03/05/2005 19:48

No....as my dh(frequently) says when eating out of date food, "when it says 'best by', it doesn't mean 'shite after'". She will be fine.

Twiglett · 03/05/2005 19:49

I'm sure she'll be fine

beansprout · 03/05/2005 19:49

Use by/sell by dates have a good built in margin. The food doesn't turn at the stroke of midnight, there is usually a good couple of days on most things. If it were prawns them v vague possibility but one mouthful and I think she will be fine.

Big shout to nan though.....!

CountessDracula · 03/05/2005 19:49

phew!

Thanks you lot I feel much happier

I'm slightly the opposite. If I have to buy supermarket beef I don't use it before the use by date otherwise it doesn't taste of anything! they hang meat for about 2 days instead of the 8 - 14 days a decent butcher would...

tamum · 03/05/2005 19:49

I thought you were going to say 10th April or something- 1 May is fine, trust me

CountessDracula · 03/05/2005 19:50

Yes quite. You would think a flippin Nanny would check these things (esp with total slobbo employer like me who cleans out fridge rarely )

No she will be fine, there was a letter on Terry Wogan this morning, where someone's DM offered to do the children's dinners. She gave the children stew from the freezer, it was all going swimmingly until the eldest little fellow piped up that the stew was older than he was. Whether it was true or not,I was rofl.

HRHDuchessofPeahead · 03/05/2005 19:50

yes shellfish obv the fresher the better

no 3 wk old lobsters in my house

CountessDracula · 03/05/2005 19:51

Oh yes quite, in fact I quite happily eat stuff from the Butchers ages later as it has no use by date! Must say beef and lamb are the exceptions

My father has stuff in his cupboards that is almost as old as me, I think his record is a blancmange mix from 1969 - I keep telling him he should donate to a museum or something

CD - read an interesting article recently (can't remember where) about a factory worker in a food factory supplying something or other to various shops. They had three different packages and three different sell by dates - one for seven days, one for 10 days and one for 14 days time. The factory H+S people said the product would actually be okay for three weeks. . Made me think.

Heathcliffscathy · 03/05/2005 19:53

think you'll be fine cd....

hunkermunker · 03/05/2005 19:53

I do tend to think the freezer has magical properties - I freeze meat and use it after the three months Haven't died yet. I don't think.

WideWebWitch · 03/05/2005 19:55

It'll be fine I reckon, agree with everyone. And agree that hunkermunker is not dead.

hunkermunker · 03/05/2005 19:56

You don't know what a relief it is to hear you say that, WWW

morningpaper · 03/05/2005 19:56

I agree with the smell-check - I'd advise EVERYONE to give all meat and fish a good SNIFF before cooking. You learn what is good and what is not. Bad food usually smells pretty bad.

CountessDracula · 03/05/2005 22:42

no puking yet (but a bit of barking LOL!)
