Does anyone know a nice not too expensive area in North London?

We currently live in Islington and have to move as we need a bigger flat but unfortunately can't buy or rent a 2 bed flat in this area (we are renting at the moment). DS is one and I am not planning to return to work for a while so we would have to live on one salary. Would like to stay in North London and live somewhere that feels safe with a nice high street and is not too pricey.....Does anyone have any ideas?

booklover, which side of islington are you?

Blu · 03/05/2005 15:15

Isn't Wood Green the new Crouch end?

bundle · 03/05/2005 15:16

yes, blu, but with added grime

FLUM · 03/05/2005 15:16

Stoke Newington. Cheap as no tube station.

dinosaur · 03/05/2005 15:19

Stoke Newington?? Cheap??? Blimey. Had to move from there six years ago as it was too expensive for us!

suzywong · 03/05/2005 15:19

Oxymoron (the thread title) surely

what about Islington end of Stroud Green?

suzywong · 03/05/2005 15:20

Palmer's Green?

FLUM · 03/05/2005 15:21

well cheaper than Islington - its all relative.

We just left Spitalfields thats kinda cheap. paid £900 month for a 2 bed, HUGE warehouse conversion.

Tuffnell Park ? tooo far out?

suzywong · 03/05/2005 15:21

Tuffnell park not cheap

GhostofNatt · 03/05/2005 15:22

East Finchley?

bundle · 03/05/2005 15:25

without an idea of how much you'd want to spend, i guess that Bounds Green is the kind of place you're looking for if you want tube plus a bit of open space. stokey has gone up a lot recently and wood green is imo choked with traffic and has a lot of v ugly houses, not enough greenspaces. palmers green isn't that near to the tube unless you're at the southgate end and don't mind getting buses as well as tube. it has a nice high street, big woolies etc. plenty of overland options too. how much do you think you want to pay?

hoxtonchick · 03/05/2005 15:26

i think stokey too, though agree with dinosaur, it's the expensive end of hackney.

suzywong · 03/05/2005 15:27

missed your calling there bundle, you should get on the blower to Foxtons now and see if they've got any vacancies

FLUM · 03/05/2005 15:28

suzy, don't mention the F-word round here...

camden v pricey unless you go for ex-local authority (see, i know all the buzz-words..)

bundle · 03/05/2005 15:33

oops what's that park in durnsford rd? next to the nice garden centre where the nice boys load up your car for you, wink wink. oh the joys of being a laydeee..
if i hear " the ever-popular haringey ladder" one more time....

suzywong · 03/05/2005 15:33

hellfire don't make the poor woman goto the Harringey Ladder

hoxtonchick · 03/05/2005 15:33

are you moving bundle?

bundle · 03/05/2005 15:35

hc, most of the time..
but dh & me can't agree on: area to move to; school (!) and...erm, most other things. oh transport too.

bundle · 03/05/2005 15:37

suzy, i actually went to see one in the h.ladder to appease dh, told him i thought it was sad that the couple were getting divorced (estate agent thought i was a witch, i think, cos he hadn't mentioned it, but all the personal stuff including photos, half wardrobe's contents had been shifted) and how i thought it would take ages to get rid of the smell of cigarettes (neither of them could smell it!)

suzywong · 03/05/2005 15:38

I lodged with a crazy woman on the HL years and years ago, right next to the awful Harringey Passage, it was AWFUL

bundle · 03/05/2005 15:39

haringey passage sounds like obscure gynae complaint!

suzywong · 03/05/2005 15:40

SPRAY!

it is in fact a passage that bisects the ladder in its entirety
