Does anyone know a nice not too expensive area in North London?

We currently live in Islington and have to move as we need a bigger flat but unfortunately can't buy or rent a 2 bed flat in this area (we are renting at the moment). DS is one and I am not planning to return to work for a while so we would have to live on one salary. Would like to stay in North London and live somewhere that feels safe with a nice high street and is not too pricey.....Does anyone have any ideas?

We just left Spitalfields thats kinda cheap. paid £900 month for a 2 bed, HUGE warehouse conversion.

without an idea of how much you'd want to spend, i guess that Bounds Green is the kind of place you're looking for if you want tube plus a bit of open space. stokey has gone up a lot recently and wood green is imo choked with traffic and has a lot of v ugly houses, not enough greenspaces. palmers green isn't that near to the tube unless you're at the southgate end and don't mind getting buses as well as tube. it has a nice high street, big woolies etc. plenty of overland options too. how much do you think you want to pay?

i think stokey too, though agree with dinosaur, it's the expensive end of hackney.

but dh & me can't agree on: area to move to; school (!) and...erm, most other things. oh transport too.

suzy, i actually went to see one in the h.ladder to appease dh, told him i thought it was sad that the couple were getting divorced (estate agent thought i was a witch, i think, cos he hadn't mentioned it, but all the personal stuff including photos, half wardrobe's contents had been shifted) and how i thought it would take ages to get rid of the smell of cigarettes (neither of them could smell it!)

I lodged with a crazy woman on the HL years and years ago, right next to the awful Harringey Passage, it was AWFUL
