can you have a passenger in the back with you as well as the experienced driver beside you?

By back seat passenger, I do of course mean my child.

You can. Yet you may not want to.

legally i'm sure its fine, in practice i really wouldn't. i learnt to drive long before having my dd, but if i were learning now i would want her as far away as possible, both for my concentration and her safety

I was told (Albeit by PIL who are a bit loony, that it is illegal, which was a bit of a bugger as I had driven the dcs round to their house with dp supervising me) Very short journey I hastenm to add!

wrinklytum - it's deffo not illegal else how would you be allowed to have the driving inspector in the back as well as the test instructor when I did my first test (and failed btw because of the distraction of carrying extra passengers!)

wrinklytum · 03/05/2009 22:21

Illegal wrt children, not having an adult passenger in the back.Sorry if not making sense!

nickytwotimes · 04/05/2009 19:35

Thank you for the replies folks.
Yes, I may not want to until I am competent, I agree!
DH is a teacher and I am hoping that in the summer holidays I can do a few short journeys with ds in the back, once I get the hang of it of course.

It's ok but a distraction. Best avoided.

hazeyjane · 04/05/2009 19:41

It's not illegal, agree that it may be a distraction early on. I do take everyone out now because I have had about 150 lessons, but am a nervous wreck about taking the test!

lottiebunny · 04/05/2009 19:44

Mum took her test with my 3mo brother in the back. Deffo not illegal.
