Singing the praises of John Lewis

Just have to say yet again how John Lewis are brilliant. We bought a portable tv in Dec 98 for dd as a Christmas present. Since then on 2 occasions the buttons have broken on it and needed replacing, which JL did , collecting and delivering it back to us too. The buttons have gone for a 3rd time, and JL have said they will just give us a brand new tv instead! The five year guarantee runs out in December this year, so I wasn't really expecting much. They have stopped selling this brand now though because they were getting too many returns apparently. So nice to get such good service for a change, they even called back when they said they would. In fact because they were so helpful we paid a bit extra to upgrade the tv to a combi, so we get another 5 year guarantee on top instead of the one year they were offering. So all in all a new tv/vcr for £65!!!!

I told them that a doll house was cheaper elsewhere so they checked it out and reduced their prices

sis · 28/10/2003 16:34

Tinker, no, i don't buy any sort of warranty but do take advantage of the extended warranties which, coincidently John Lewis offered when we bought some appliances for a new kitchen (honestly, I really don't work for JL!).

princesspeahead · 28/10/2003 18:05

I did this with carpeting before I bought it. it was £x per metre at jl and about £4 per metre cheaper at a local carpet shop. I told them, and they checked it out, and then said they would match the price, so I ordered it from JL.
I was rather pleased with that as I was carpeting a whole house and didn't trust the local carpet shop to fit it as well/quickly etc as JL

alibubbles · 28/10/2003 18:26

I never take out warranties either, my Siemans washing machine has 5 years parts and labour with it.

With our Nat West Black card we have a policy that covers all electrical appliances in the house, it is with Norwich Union and anyone can get it, for about £15 a month, it is a domestic appliances policy. They paid up for a new combination microwave last year, after having replaced the magnetron and touch panel. I have had my tumble drier door replaced, the fridge freezer thermostat replaced, the video fixed (DH broke that!) There is no limit to what you claim and they base the repairs on if it is economically viable to repair, if not they will replace less an amount for how old it is.

I favour JL too - they are pretty good I admit, and consequently I've spent a fortune there. Love their child friendly restaurant too at the JL in West Quay Southampton.

However I have had one bad experience with a sales assistant there (won't bore you with the details) but admit this is a total rarity. Usually the sales staff are well trained and courteous.

The only thing that winds me up is their made to measure curtains and blinds department. They usually have only a couple of staff on, and whilst there is only one person in front of you in the queue it takes about 40 minutes before you get to your turn. I nearly lost the will to live on Sunday when dd (15 months) was going spare at being forced to wait it out with us. In the end dh stood in the queue whilst I let her run off some steam in the store and tinker with the haberdashery display (serves them bloody right for making me wait so long). Kept going back to the queue to join DH and saying to my dd in mock stage whisper (i.e. really loudly) 'Are you bored sweetie, of course you are - why not have a tantrum - that might make them speed up from reverse gear!!"

codswallop · 28/10/2003 20:28

Sorry dont have the same experience with JL.Bought an electric toothbrush for dh(£34.50).When i saw the same cheaper(£23.99) in boots ,they refused to price match it.

sis · 02/11/2003 20:33

guddy, did they say why they would not honour the never knowingly undersold policy?

handlemecarefully · 03/11/2003 08:25

Codswallop,

We should meet over a coffee!

My usual spot is near the 'stand' which concentrates on cakes and pastries (ummm - why could that be!)

Oh dear I do think we can spot propaganda whn we see it. anyway this thread gives a balanced viewpoint
Hope you are not accusing her of corruption ...

justiner · 03/11/2003 12:46

Hi Dadslib,
I'm sure Lou33 will come back to you too but let me reassure you that we have not and would never "run a thread in support of advertisers". Lou33 is an unpaid, voluntary moderator, we have no influence over the threads she chooses to start and have not, and never would try to influence a member to put something up on the site that wasn't their opinion. The John Lewis button on our site is not advertising but an standard website affiliate deal - if you buy something from them by clicking through from mumsnet the site gets a small commission. We view the independence of these boards as sacrosanct and would never try to interfere which is why in the past and no doubt in the future you will find loads of threads slagging off discount partners, advertisers and potential sponsors plus loads of links to potential rivals. In short, yes, it is SHEAR COINCIDENCE that this thread was started. We're really sorry that you think we'd resort to propoganda (did others didn't think this too? if so clearly we're doing something wrong here ) - we would not.
Best,
Justine, Carrie and Rachel

guddy · 03/11/2003 13:03

Hi sis

Yes this is exactly what they said.
Reading this thread prompted me to ask for a price match since many over here have got them in the past.
Anyways cant do any more can i ?

lou33 · 03/11/2003 17:08

Sorry Dadslib but your paranoia is running amok, lol! I don't go to any page other than the conversations area, so haven't a clue who is and isn't advertising.

Now I'm off to count my John Lewis shares .

(Wanders off chuckling to self at the suspicious minds some people have).
