Write him a letter of thanks, spelling out what he's done to help, and copy it to his superior. It will probably go into some kind of appraisal file & be helpful to him in the future.

Agree re letter. I once wrote to the manager of the shopping centre after one of the car park staff had cleared up DS's sick to thank them and tell them how very grateful I was because it meant I could concentrate on calming down Ds (at the time I'd just sort of run off with a vomiting child, so didn't properly thank them). They wrote an incredibly effusive letter back telling me the worker in question had been "formally thanked". Got the impression that no one ever thanked them for anything and they really did appreciate it.

Agree, a letter to his boss would be appreciated I'm sure.

I wrote to thank the nursing staff after I'd given birth and they copied my letter to all the team involved. It's nice to take the time to say thanks for doing such a good job. Nowadays, people only seem to expect to get complaints.

He would be well chuffed with a letter. DP is a policeman and he has only had a letter of thanks once in two years. I think he is a nice one . But it is something they very rarely get and may also be rewarded by his superiors, so please do!

I'm sure there can't be rule that you can't be friends with a policeman! If he's become a friend why not invite him and his wife (if he has one) over for dinner.
