Feel so pissed off, upset, angry, tired etc. Woke up at 3 am to hear my back door being tried, immediately checked to see if it was my dp leaving for work and realised he was still asleep. Then heard loads of banging, cupboard doors being opened and stuff woke up my dp who told me to sod off, I told him i was serious, continued to hear noises so went and checked on my kids to see if they were still in bed. Dp got up and armed with an iron, after shouting down stairs we went down to find an open window in the kitchen and both our wallets stolen. Stupid tw8t had even climbed back out the window despite their being a key in the back door. Police came after about five mins and dogs recovered my dp's wallet, all cash etc taken. Scent disappeared in the next street up. Am so angry at the moment, mainly because my dp works nights and i feel like someones just takenaway my sense of security. At the minute I feel quite calm, but i have no idea how I'll feel when he goes to work tomorrow night. Just had to share this as its too early to phone anyone and i feel all wierd and hyper.

Its highly unlikely it will happen again and you realise now he wasn't there to hurt anyone. I wouldn't start thinking on the lines of weapons by your bed because at the end of the day they will be used against you. You must feel dreadful at the moment and it will probably take a while to sleep through noises again. Sleep with your mobile under your pillow for a while. Definetly get window locks but leave the keys in easy reach as they are a fire hazard.

If burglars take stuff like the TV, video, DVD etc, then it is very common for them to come back in 6 months when you've replaced everything. A friend of mine's been hit 3 times like this.

Burglars tend to take off when they hear noise. If you think you're being burgled, make a lot of noise, switch lights on etc and they will go.

Can you tell I've been burgled?

Sorry to hear about this. You must feel really violated. Hope you sleep well tonight.

IIRC victim suppert info usully arrives in the post, rather than directly fom police

Thankyou so much lovely people for your advice and kind words. I think we are definately going to have to take security more seriously and get some kind of alarm, or see if someone can make ours work. Feeling quite sick now, tired and fuzzy with kids off school still don't think it will hit me until later when the kids are in bed and i don't have to pretend anymore! Scenes of crime have been out and lifted a few prints, probably mine, but we'll have to wait and see, fortunately they were only in my kitchen so my whole house doesn't feel violated, i am thankful for that and also that my kids were unaware despite my shouting down the stairs!! Cheers again peeps it is much appreciated and nice to be able to talk to others, specially when none of your rl mates are answering their phones!!

A slightly lighter note about my break-in. The theives were a bit thick as they stole the video and took the remote for the telly. The only good thing was they took all our CD's. Gave me an opportunity to not replace DH's more dubious ones, eg, Rolf Harris - Stairway to Heaven.

Hope tonight is okay for you.

do secruity lights put burglers off? am extremely paranoid as we're in a bunglow and alone a lot atm. was thinking of secruioty lights front and back, the ones with sensors? and how much does an alarm system cost?

gscrym · 29/04/2005 16:22

Homebase and B and Q sell them. Have a look at their website, it should tell you.

My mom got broken into a few weeks back. Shes got some special lights (called dawn to dusk I think) that you set to go on and off at certain times. And shes got sash jammers on all her windows now.
Whats the world comin too....

debs26 · 29/04/2005 16:34

poor you if it helps our house got broken into and they did not come back. sounds like your burglars were similar to ours - after cash, probably for drugs. dp is still annoyed that they took his good hammer and torch when they failed to find money (didnt venture upstairs looking for it, pathetic cowards). leave a light on at night (invest in energy saving light bulbs) and put lots of plants on window ledges as it makes it harder for them to get in without making a big noise

emmatom · 29/04/2005 17:36

your main police station should have a crime prevention officer, or failing that, a list of reputable alarm companies, who won't rip you off or anything.

They may also be able to recommend lights and locks for you.
