Just wondered if anyone has used any of the Michel Thomas language courses and what you thought of them. Great claims are being made! I'm thinking of getting the Italian one for myself, but also wondered if the French one would be helpful for my 12 year old dd who is doing French at school. Any thoughts anyone?

Do you mean the ones you can get on CD (and probably tape too) which promise confidence in hours'? We have a Spanish one and didn't find it much good, for 2 reasons. One, the teaching style didn't suit me. It was all supposed to be done without writing anything down, which just isn't my thing - I'm very much a paper and pen' person. Secondly, it wasn't aimed at what we wanted - which was just a few basics to tide us over when on holiday. It's really supposed to be a proper language course. So I suppose it depends on how you want to use it and how you like to learn. It might well be useful as an adjunct to some proper lessons (e.g. for your dd). Could you try and borrow one to see what you think?

Thanks for your comments, I think I might see if I can borrow one from the library or possibly buy the 2 CD introductory course to try it out. One thing I have read (in an Amazon review) is that these are not suitable for listening in the car as you have to keep pausing the CD.
