car wingmirror glass broken- how easy to replace myself?

As the title says:
Someone managed to shatter the glass in one of the wingmirrors of our car. I know going to garage will probably be hugely expensive and overcharged, so was wondering how easy it is to replace DIY.
They are these electrically controlled ones, and it is only the glass that is broken, the inside plate looks fine.

Its a doodle. Remove the old glass from the plate. You can buy the new one from any car parts traders, such as Carbits, or anyone you can find near you. Youll have to give them your number plate details so they can find the exact one for your car. Normally come between £6 and 25 pounds depending on the car.
They are just sticky back so you can stick it onto the plate. You can if its not too badly smashed, stick the new one over the old one.

just got a quote for £57.50
so that is ridiculous right?

I've replace wing mirrir glass on a few of my cars, (used to have to park on dodgy road) I normally bought the replacements from ebay and they are dead easy to fit, as Chellesgirl said just stick it on. Should cost much deoending on car amke.

FatFree · 20/04/2009 23:02

I've bought the stick over ones when i decide that my car is more like a bus and smash the mirrors on width restrictions

I once broke another set going through a width resistriction because i was distracted by a bloke jogging by wearing teeny tiny lycra shorts

Fat... Uurrghhh!!!!!!!1

Honney....Yes rediculous! Where are you, shame you aint in Brum, If you are then yippee. If not, and you cant find a trader then get bk to me and I may be able to send you some via my suppliers.

Honneybunny · 20/04/2009 23:33

FatFree: lycra short eeks , as long as it was a fit bloke, which i guess it probably was, since you were so disctracted..

Chelles, thanks for the offer, but no, am in cambridge area. I think this quote may have been for a mirror and backing cradle, although it did not say.

I found some much much cheaper ones (sticky ones) on rapidcarparts. Heard of them before? Just emailed dh to tell him about the problem, as he's away. That's also why i asked if it was easy to do DIY, as i haven't done it before, and am not that handy with cars etc. My mum and dad are visiting on Thursday, so I guess my dad might end up having to do it, if I can't figure it out.

We're so careful with our car, that it is really awful that something like this happens...

I know, Honney, it can be awful, but you have to remember its only a wing mirror and easily replaced. A garage will always say you need a 'new this and this' to go with 'this and this' just to make thier money.

Yes Ive heard of them, but never use anyone else other than my own traders/suppliers. You will be able to do it yourself.

Honneybunny · 21/04/2009 08:14

Thanks Chelles, i know.
I just placed the order it cost less than £10, so not too bad.
