Just done an internet shop-what a loathsome task!

Is is nice and easy from now on or like that every time? It was horrid, and I felt so uninspired to spend money (well, spend a lot of money, but feel no satisfaction-so unlike me!). Do you get more excited/inspired about it? And spend the week jotting down ingredients to add to next weeks basket? I just feel like we have a whole load of rubbish and will have nothing of substance!

I hate it- so time consuming and I slways feel I've forgotten something, which I rarely do on an actual visit.

hf128219 · 31/03/2009 06:52

I know Ocado is expensive - but is a very easy site to use.

scienceteacher · 31/03/2009 07:13

I recently bought an Ocado membership which gives me free delivery of any order over £40.

This means that I can make an order every few days, and neither have too much nor too little food in the house.

I also use the recipes they have on the site, which means we get a bit more variety in what I cook.

AllBuggiedOut · 31/03/2009 09:25

That sounds good Scienceteacher - but I can't see anything about it on the site. How much does it cost?

MrsGokWan · 31/03/2009 09:30

I found it got easier after a ew shops and I had the details of previous items I had bought already on the site, so quick scan through and away we go.

I do my shop through mysupermarket.co.uk and when I think of something I just add it as I go along like a shopping list. Makes everything a lot quicker and easier and I can see which supermarket is open.

MrsGokWan · 31/03/2009 09:31

no I didn't mean that [slaps head emoticon]

I meant which supermarket is cheapest [roll eyes emoticon]

JudithChalmers · 31/03/2009 09:32

it is SO SO fast

Nontoxic · 31/03/2009 09:39

If you've got nothing of substance, I take it that means ingredients to make actual meals?

I sit for five minutes and write a basic menu - six or seven evening meals, then systematically order everything to make them.

After that it's the staples like bread, milk etc. and then any extras like yoghurts, biscuits, snacks.

Once your 'favourites' are there it is much quicker - although I find Tesco's website more efficient than Waitrose, which I've started using lately.

As the week goes on, I write things needed on a blackboard in the kitchen.

There are often things I don't get, but I'd rather do a quick dash for them than spend an hour an a half schleppng round the aisles.

JudithChalmers · 31/03/2009 09:39

tell me of ocado memebership

procrastinatingparent · 31/03/2009 09:52

It's so much quicker once you have done it a few times.

And I think much cheaper because I don't buy stuff not on my list, and I can edit my basket at the end and take off any impulse buys,

muggglewump · 31/03/2009 09:59

I also use MySupermarket and always start from my previous trolley which means all the baics are ordered first.
After that I check out the offers and make menus from there, and then add on bits and bobs and the odd treat.

I take an hour or so over it but that includes checking the cupboards a couple of times to see if I have stuff to make a meal with X offer IYSWIM.

I love it, I never pay delivery as I use free codes and as the Supermarket I use is two buses away it's much quicker, cheaper and less hassle than going there.

MrsMills · 31/03/2009 09:59

I used to love doing food shopping online, I felt more in control, and less gullible. The first one does take a while longer but then you can rattle it off in 15 minutes.

Anyway you're forgetting the best bit - having it delivered to your door.

I always found the delivery guys loved a good gossip too.

Pawslikepaddington · 31/03/2009 11:14

I am v excited about the delivery bit! ! I have a lot of ingredients, and have started to make my own sauces, pizzas, biscuits etc so don't even have the odd pizza in there, which may make it look more bare than it really is. It will all come and my fridge will prob explode under the weight, which will be great, but it feels like I have about 3 meals and two lunches worth (but that is because I used to do it as a monthly shop, which I can't do now as we don't have a freezer any more).

What is your cost ratio with Ocado? I always spend SO much more there, how do you "wise buy" with them?

MrsGokWan · 31/03/2009 14:06

I have a fe items in my mysupermarket basket and at the moment it is readining

Tesco £22.67
Asda £18.15
Sainsburys £21.56
Ocado £21.61

It is interesting to see the different prices.

hf128219 · 31/03/2009 15:26

Ocado on demand is £99 per year:

You can now enjoy unlimited free delivery charges for a year, regardless of what you order or how often you shop. You'll also benefit from priority access to two Christmas delivery slots and one free Christmas delivery.

Sidge · 31/03/2009 16:23

Once you've got your 'favourites' list set up it's easy peasy. I tend to order the same sort of things each week so it doesn't take long to click on them, and then when I need other things I just type them in and find them - it's better if you're more specific.

I love online grocery shopping, it saves me so much time and money and I detest trawling around a supermarket.

Pawslikepaddington · 01/04/2009 12:17

It got delivered this morning-god that was easy!! Have moved from having a huge freezer at the old house to a larder fridge at this one (space probs), and am really at how much more fresh food is than frozen. Oh well, must cut back on the old non-essentials! It is so exciting having it delivered isn't it!! And you get the "oh wow, I had forgotten I had ordered that-yuuuum!" thing too-better than Xmas!

Dd's first day of packed lunches tomorrow, am getting really excited about packing it now!

BitOfFunnyBunny · 01/04/2009 12:36

So what you're saying, hf, is that Ocado charge £99 a year to deliver stuff? It sounds a bit steep tbh.

MrsGokWan · 01/04/2009 14:01

BoF if you are one of those people that shop week to week then it is only £1.90 a week for delivery.

hf128219 · 01/04/2009 16:55

Or you could shop as often as you like - finances permitting!

scienceteacher · 01/04/2009 17:16

I get an Ocado delivery twice a week, so it is less than a pound per delivery. I could get it more often if I wanted (as long as I spent £40), and probably will over the Easter holidays as we will have twice a many meals to prepare.

The nice thing is that I don't have to think of what to cook for more than 3 days at a time.
