I'm going to make an unsolicited plea for people to talk to the NCT about their experiences of pregnancy and childbirth.
Over two years ago I contacted the NCT for advice on whether to do anything about having been denied a homebirth while in labour. A little later the government announced that every woman would have free choice where to give birth etc etc etc. Then there was another announcement about more funding for midwives.
When the media contacted the NCT looking for somebody to comment on the human-interest side of these stories, the NCT had my details and asked me whether I'd be interested. As a result I was interviewed in a major broadsheet and also appeared on national and local news programmes several times. I hoped that by presenting the truth of what was happening despite official announcements, I might in some small way help other mums get genuine free choice and good care in childbirth. And it was fun to do, as well.
Two years on, and I am still being contacted by the NCT to talk to the media when staffing and homebirth issues come up, because I am the only person on their books with that experience. Quite apart from the fact that I think it's time to put the experience behind me, I don't think I'm a good ambassador any more. How can my experience of 2 years ago be valid any more, in comment on current circumstances?
So, please, contact the NCT, tell them about your experiences. Your story could raise public awareness and help other mums.
In fact, do it now - they called me again this week because some stats are about to be published about where women give birth and why!
