Are you an artist or a designer?

My dd is dyslexic and struggles a lot at school - but she loves art, draws every day and dreams of going to art college already - in Japan apparently

My question is - if you are an artist or a designer, what helped you as a child, or alternatively what help and encouragment would you have liked to get?

Lots of stuff you can do to help out.. going to galleries, exhibitions is great. wander round art shops and let her choose what painting drawing stuff she'd like. ( wish list), small portable easel and some boards/ paints etc. digi camera and photoshop is also great.

books on artists, posters of their work.

The crunch point for me, I had already decided I wanted to go to art college, but my then art teacher organised for me to spend a day at our local Art college. it was the best thing ever!

Oh thanks for the great ideas!

I think a trip to a London gallery might be a great idea and a digi camera for her next birthday!

I have been wondering if any of the well known London Art Colleges are open to the public sometimes?

why not just give them a bell and see if your dd can pop along for a visit sure they would love to help.

how old is she?

Podrick · 20/03/2009 12:38

Well she is only 9 but perhaps I might try anyway

Sometimes I think it is good to get an insight into the world of adults/work even if you are some years away still!

Could she do an art class outside school? Once they get into juniors they seem to do very little at school. Our local art school does do summer classes for school children but they are not cheap

I used to be part of an art club at primary school - it started up because me and a few other children expressed an interest in art and one of the teachers ran it as an after school activity once a week. Perhaps you could suggest something like that to her teacher? You could offer to help out as well.

I was always interested in Art as a kid too, always drawing and making things. Just make sure she has a nice supply of art materials, pencils, pastels, paint, charcoal etc. You can get little art boxes to put them all in, like a little tool box. I loved my first art boxes. I'm sure she'll love experimenting with the different effects different materials can give.

I also loved going to the library and looking through the Art books and the Artists section, maybe a nice after school activity to do together.

I have very fond memories of going to Art/Craft Galleries/shops and Potteries with my parents. Seeing Artists at work in their studios is really exciting too something she may enjoy. Alot of areas have Art Trails/Open Studio's where local Artists studios are open to the public (maybe do a bit of googing for your area for this).

A sketch book would be a nice idea for her, in it she could draw, collect postcards, images from magazines, leaves/pressed flowers anything really that interests her for it's colours, shapes, textures etc.

You mentioned maybe visiting some Art Colleges, degree shows are open to the public, just look up the London Colleges websites for details.

Then there's New Designers which she would probably love as you have the best from all the degree shows in one place.

Hope something here is of interest to your dd
