e-mails have been coming to my junk box over the last 2 days saying there are problems with my account..something about blacklisted ip address trying to access my account at this certain bank.....the thing is i have not got an account at this bank

apparently the account is now suspended-according to todays e-mail and it is giving me a link which i have not opened.

should i just ignore this?

anyone know what i should do??

ignore....they are phishing e-mails

Ponders · 19/03/2009 12:46

ignore, but forward them to the bank concerned - if you google the bank name + phishing you should find an address.

eg for Abbey (I've had 2 from them in the last 2 days) it's [email protected]

Ponders · 19/03/2009 12:46

(when I say "from them" I mean not from them, from phishers!)

Hassled · 19/03/2009 12:46

It's spam and do not follow links - just delete. They're sent out in bulk in the hope that they may strike lucky with someone who does have an account at whatever bank they've picked, and will then divulge passwords/PINs etc. Stay well away.

idobelieveinfairies · 19/03/2009 12:47

yes it is abbey that i have had them from too, thanks i will do that.

The latest one is really convincing - normally they're semi-literate but this one might well fool people who have got an Abbey account:

"Dear customer,

We would like to inform you that Abbey National Bank has been subject to recent phishing attacks. As a result you may have received spoof emails with the heading account suspended or urgent attention required. Please be aware that these are fraudulent messages sent by online criminals who wish to obtain your sensitive data, such as Abbey National Bank password, credit card number, etc, by collecting them via phishing websites which impersonate Abbey National Bank.
Any customers who have confirmed their login data at these phishing sites have made it possible for hackers to access their Abbey National Bank accounts.
Following our Security Department investigations, we have found that you may have clicked on a link in a phishing email. Therefore, as a security measure, your account has been temporarily suspended for outgoing transactions.
We would like to ask you to click the following link and fill the forms to confirm your identity with Abbey National Bank, as our Security Department has found out access attempts which are most probably not authorised.
Click here to confirm your identity
Thank you for your co-operation.
Abbey National Bank is committed to ensure the safeguard of each customer's personal information, making sure only authorised individuals have access to their accounts. It is all about your security.

Kindest regards,
e-Banking Department
Abbey National Bank Plc"

It has all the proper headers & flashing ad things as well

Emails cost nothing to send and even one good response could be worth £000s to the people running the scam so it is worth them putting in the time and effort to make sure they look good!

I just phoned my bank and told them never to contact me by email as I would not respond and then I could ignore all banking emails of any type. It keep things nice and simple - which I like!

idobelieveinfairies · 19/03/2009 14:39

Goodness that does sound convincing.....

mine have gone through the 3 stages of suspending the account (non-existing)....what made me think was the amount of exclamation marks and the e-mail title..not very business like!!!!!

Ignore them...
I get them daily and even from one I bank with...Don't even click on the link.

Just delete or transfer into spam folder.

I got one from the Tax office last week..About over payment in tax... Asked dh, how would this be fake...Then I read at the bottom it asked for basic info THEN debit card info..to allow them to refund it to be..

Yeah right...............and then steal all the millons I don't have.
