DD1 has ww2 trip and show coming up soon.I have a black skirt, shoes etc. but haven't got a clue what to put her in.i know the gingham school dresses/pinafores are a popular choice but the picture we've been sent home is a sketch of a girl with a box-pleat skirt,tank-top and a curvy-collared blouse.has anyone done this cheaply before?

I would have thoought you could get away with a kilt type skirt, or some school skirts have those box pleats. Tank top style jumpers from Primark and any peterpan collered shirt ,again my DD's school one is like that. HTH

ds went on an evacuee thing and I made a tank top by cutting off sleeves of a v necked school jumper..if that's any help...am sure gingham dress is fine, short socks, plaits, maybe a hand knitted type scarf...I also made a gas mask box out of a small square box with a string round his neck and he had a little cardboard suitcase (bought from toyshops) with a cardboard and string tied luggage label.
I also made him a war time packed lunch wraped in p[aper with an eggless sponge cake for authenticity !

Once upon a time I was in a BBC tv drama about WW2 and they dressed everyone up in my class as evacuees, as extras. I wore a navy pleated kilt, white knee socks, brown buckled sandals, and a Fair isle knit jumper which drove me mad with the itch and kirby grips to keep my hair off my face. Everyone seemed to be dressed in a variation of that combination with a lot of knitwear, in dull colours. I am sure charity shops would have something

she mentioned a pinafore dress to me....a school one.would this be ok?

Pinafore would be fine as would a cardigan in place of a tank top.

Grey knee socks are very authentic, brown or black shoes and a cardigan (ideally grey/dark red/navy/mustard/fairisle if you have one). If any of the items are too large, or borrowed from the boys, don't worry all the better as often children wore hand-me-downs that didn't fit.

A big part of the look is side-parting the hair for girls. If short, tie the fringe to one side, with a bobble and a ribbon bow (in similar dowdy colour), if long, side part then two plaits.

I am trying to sort this out for my DD aswell as she has her trip next tuesday.

Thankyou for the help

Round neck cardigan and box pleat skirt in grey or brown or a print dress with round collar. Ribbons in hair or fringe clipped back to one side.

You must have a name tag attached to her somewhere, and be carrying a cardboard box with string handle over shoulder for gas mask.

Does this help ? We caught an episode on BBC4 last night.
