..this morning while we were shopping, really enjoyed themselves and find a good use for it! DH's having as much fun trying to sort out a replacement!

(And if you have a Citroen Xsara Picasso, we've now learnt a bike chain is good for securing the spare wheel!)

Oh never even thought about my spare getting nicked, I have a van and it is underneath, not secured, might try a bike chain.

Sorry this happened to you and thanks for the tip.

People have been nicking them for yonks. My mum and dad got theirs stolen about 4 years ago. Apparantly it is a design fault ! l

DH did say that he knew that the spare was easily "nickable" before we got the car but well as always, you never think it'll happen to you!

DH's off to get a bike chain this morning from Halfords for when we get a replacement. Skramble- some websites suggest getting a chain with a combination lock (like you'd get on a suitcase) and then wrapping a plastic bag (or on one website they suggested a condom!) around the lock so that it doesn't get jammed up from mud and stuff.

It's 2 years old. DH was showing me yesterday, that it has a sort of "bolt" in the boot that keeps the cradle holding the spare wheel tight to the underside of the car. But apparently all thieves have to do is deflate the tyre a bit, so that there's a bit of "give" in it so that they can unhook the cradle! Doesn't sound like Citroen have put much thought into it if they have changed the design!

Ruby- yes they are!

Oh Crap. Mine is an 05 plate.

I knew there had been a problem but I thought teh design had been changed before I got mine.

petunia · 08/03/2009 12:54

From what DH was describing, you get the longest chain you can get and thread it around the cradle and the tyre. DH's out at the moment; I'll check I've got that bit right when he gets back.

Can I ask if anyone has alloy wheels? I'm interested to know whether the spare is an alloy (very expensive and can see why they went for one of those) or just a "normal" wheel, probably with a Citroen plastic cover.

Spares are normally steel radial's on most models.

petunia · 08/03/2009 20:52

Ah, hopefully it was a steel one then.
We've found a replacement on eBay for £65 delivered and DH found a bike chain for £3.99 in Halfords. (SlightlyMad, just seen you posting on another thread and don't think you live that far from Leicester. If I said 'Beaumont Leys', you might know where I was shopping yesterday!)

I might have walked on the same patch of ground today as we took the DCs for a splash!

I had a VW Polo years ago - came out one morning to go to work - front near-side was on bricks! One wheel - why?????

petunia · 09/03/2009 09:48

SlightlyMad- won't be able to nick spare wheel because of the sturdy bike chain (as recommended by petunia!)

Doodle- I know. I was all and full of "Why??" as well!
