MIL and FIL stated that they wanted to be called my their real names as they felt too young to be grandparents ( both over 60 )

My M&D are called Grannish and Grandpa Nutcase ....

Guess who they see more often

roisin · 15/04/2005 21:51

When we were little they both refused to be "granny", so we called them both "fat grandma" and "little grandma"

So my parents were keen to be called something different to dh's parents!!
Mine: grandma and grandpa
His: granny and grandad

Miaou · 15/04/2005 21:52

My parents are Granny and Poppa - dad came up with Poppa, which he prefers to Grandpa or Grandad.

Dh's father is Grandad Ken (his choice - to differentiate himself from other grandads of my nephews and nieces)

bettythebuilder · 15/04/2005 21:53

my dd calls her 3 grandparents all "Ga-Ga".And very appropriate it is too! however she also sees anyone with grey hair as a "Ga-Ga" so was saying it very loudly to a lady in front of us in the supermarket queue today!

WestCountryLass · 15/04/2005 22:34

I come from a big, extended family where NONE of the older generation wants to be straightforward Grandma and Grandpa, Granny or Nan. So, we've got lots of affectionate names which include:
Mimi and Pop
Coco
Bebe
Honey

Grandparent names that are not used by our family, but which made me laugh are:
Grambo
and for a particularly beautiful older woman - Glam-Ma

merrygoround · 15/04/2005 22:52

nanny and granddad (dp's side), and Oma (my mum, being Dutch).

bobbybob · 15/04/2005 22:54

Gran and Grandad for in laws (they chose themselves)
G Man and Granny M for my parents.

treacletart · 15/04/2005 23:04

Grandma & Grandpa (called the same by all their grandchildren), Granny[first name] and Grandad (only 1 grandchild on that side and also a greatgrandmother known as granny[surname] hence granny[firstname]

suedonim · 16/04/2005 17:25

Nanna and grandad for us, though sadly, no grandads still alive. Each set of grandparents were differentiated by the addition of their cat's names to the nanna bit!

misdee · 16/04/2005 17:26

spacedonkey · 16/04/2005 17:38

DP's parents are Nanny First Name and Grandad First Name (their choice).

dinosaur · 16/04/2005 17:44

My parents are known as granny and granda.
DH's father is grandpa, although they hardly ever see him and when they talk about him they refer to him as "M's dad".

spacedonkey · 16/04/2005 17:44

I used to call my mum's dad "grandad with the whiskers" and my dad's dad "grandad with the no whiskers"

lisa34 · 16/04/2005 17:47

They are known as Nanny and Gran Gran x

triceratops · 16/04/2005 17:52

Granny and Opa (he is german) and Grandma and Grandpa. Great grandparents are Big G and GaGa (which she is not too pleased about really!)

Posey · 16/04/2005 21:44

Yorkiegirl - I think you're the only person to mention a grampy, which is what the men on my mum's side of the family are referred to. When I was at primary school, I never told anyone (except best mate) that I called my grandfather Grampy as they all said grandad. Didn't like being different.

my parents are 'mamu' and 'papa'. my niece, the first grandchild, managed to get these terms out of 'grandma' and 'grandpa'. the nicknames stuck.

dh's parents are 'nana' and 'da'. dd came up w/those herself.

serenity · 16/04/2005 21:55

yiayia - Dh's mum, and papou for his dad (now dead)

Nanny - my mum, they call my stepdad by his first name because I do, but I regret not getting them to call him something else (what I don't know!)

Great Nan - my mum's mum, my nan!
