Can two brown eyed parents have a blue eyed child?

OP posts:
Toothache · 15/04/2005 08:43

Contrary to popular belief, Blue is the dominant gene. I have 2 blue-eyed children yet everyone in my family is brown-eyed. DH has blue eyes.

NomDePlume · 15/04/2005 08:48

DH has blue eyes, I have brown. DD has blue eyes.

My father (pah!) has blue eyes and my Mum has brown. I have brown eyes.

lou33 · 15/04/2005 08:54

i have brown eyes and dh has blue, all four of our brood have blue eyes

NomDePlume · 15/04/2005 08:59

It always startles me slightly just how blonde/blue your four are, Lou. I reckon you've got some sort of a lab going in the shed....

My theory is further backed up by your 4 kids & no stretchmarks claims

lou33 · 15/04/2005 09:17

children of the damned they are

expatinscotland · 15/04/2005 09:18

I'm pretty sure eye colour is governed by multiple alleles; not just two.

Where is tamum?

lou33 · 15/04/2005 12:19

runs from rnb.....

tamum · 15/04/2005 13:31

Hellooooo (thanks lou!)

Yep, expatinscotland is right, it's not a single gene the way they tell you in school, there are multiple genes with many alleles involved. There are a few major ones which is why eye colour often follows the predicted pattern, but it's not remotely as cut-and-dried as text books make out. There's definitely no reason at all to doubt your cousin's baby's paternity, squirrel3.

The earlier thread is here , by the way

psychomum5 · 15/04/2005 13:46

Lou......Don't feel alone...I have 5 kiddies and NOT ONE stretch mark either!!!!

I am always given evil glares from my friends for that. and also because I am still also a size 10/12 too

As for the blue eyed Q. I have hazel eyes, DH also has hazel eyes, altho his are more brown. We have 2 kiddies with blue eyes and 3 with deep brown....none have actually got either of our colouring...[confused emoticon]

Chandra · 15/04/2005 14:24

You are soo lucky!, I got the stretch marks even before the children!

I guess no further explanation about blue eyes genetics is needed, is it?

lou33 · 15/04/2005 15:09

am a size 10 as well

better both get ready to leg it!

PsychoFlame · 15/04/2005 15:13

Psycho - (lol Lou... join my chant..) We've got no stretch marks! We've got no stretch marks!! On your marks, get set.... GO....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flame - I don't mind my stretch marks that came as basic pregnancy... it is the ones that appeared 2 days before she was born (after being left to go a month overdue) that bug me!!!! If I'd had her on time they wouldn't exist!!!! I went from pretty sunburst ones on my hips, to a roadmap on my tummy . Plus side though... throw up for 9 months solid - back to original weight in one week
