twin 2 - boy goes to cubs and does all the cub stuff and is going camping and gets badges.
twin 1 - girl want to go to cubs is this allowed - thought i read somwhere about a girl who did this and with sex discrimination they cant do anything to stop it - its not like boys are stopped from going to brownies is it

no! am not taking her to brownies - i know this is selfish but am not running round after three kids taking them to dance class, ballet, sports, as most other mums do, as well as school stuff, shed loads of homework they get and a full time job 13 yr old son and life shit.
i dont do running after kids
son goes to cubs cos someone takes him - or he wouldnt go.
and they charge £7.00 a month - direct debit - my my things have moved on!

so can a girl join cubs?

custdy, they can but I think it's at the discretion of the pack leader. In small places where there are not enough children to have cubs and brownies and scouts and guides they often join forces (but as cubs and scouts with girls, not brownies and guides with boys, isn't that peculiar?)

Have you asked the cub leader? He/she might be willing if you could find 3 or 4 girls to join - just having one would be a bit awkward.

PS Not selfish at all. Running around is bluddy hard work on top of Life.

janh, girls definately can join cubs - and I think all new packs have to be mixed. But existing ones can decide for themselves - I think it isn't just the cub pack but the whole troop that has to agree - so they girls don't get to scout age and then their be nothing for them. They may also need to have women leaders in place - but I'm not certain about this.

Yes Janh - you have quoted quite correctly. A cub pack cannot take girls if the girls cannot then move on to scouts; when I was a cub leader I wanted to admit girls but as the scout leaders were not keen to admit girls into the troop (obviously you would need female leaders so there are complications if you don't have any female leaders) I was unable to do so.

I assume this does not come under the Equal Opportunities Act, like male only golf clubs etc.

I have to say I don't think £7 a month is unreasonable for cubs' subscriptions, to run exciting activities, offer different crafts, cooking etc all costs money - believe me, leaders usually pay all their own expenses, uniform, training, petrol etc - you can claim it but when the group runs on a shoestring most leaders don't.

janh · 05/04/2003 20:08

That's interesting, Lindy - so if a scout troop agrees to take girls, and recruits a female leader, who subsequently resigns, does that mean that if they can't replace her the whole troop has to pack up? I can imagine that would make them reluctant apart from other considerations!

I agree that £7 a month is quite reasonable - I think it might have been the direct debit custardo meant! (Not like trotting along with 50p for subs in your hot little hand a few years back.)

thanks for the website - i looked then sent them a mail to ask them - i also looked at the sea scouts i want to find the nearest for my eldest son there is listed one in kent named The Water Activity Training Scouts ( twats) their acronym not mine - i swear its there - i mean would you really sent your son/ daughter to the twats?

yes janh i did mean the direct debit - what happened to 20p subs?

What a name - yes I'd steer well away from that group, custardo.

for your information, there are girls are in our scout troop and younger girls are either in the girls-only Rainbows or in mixed cub troops.

Just wondering, are there any boy brownies?

Lindy · 06/04/2003 16:22

janh - good question about what happens if a female leader resigns, I don't really know the answer as my active involvement with the Cubs ended a few years ago & until DS (hopefull) joins, I'm taking a break from it (help with brownies sometimes though!!).

No, boys can't join brownies or guides; the Guide Movement voted to stay all-female.
