Are you up to making your own? It's really, really easy. Just sewing straight lines and buying some ruffle tape or making some tab tops.

If you make them yourself then they're made to measure and as cheap as the material you get.

littlelamb · 21/02/2009 15:21

Ah, not online but I was going to recommend making them yourself! When I moved into my flat the curtains were soooo awful and it was so expensive to buy new ones, even though thtey were nothing special. When dd needed new curtain a few months ago I went to the fabric shop with measurements, got all the fabric, tracking and curtain hooks for a fiver (lovely material too) and asked the lady in the shop if she knew anyone who could sew. She did it for me for a tenner, and in less than a day. I took her my old curtains and she put the lining on the new pair, so even cheaper. Might be worth a try?

littlelamb · 21/02/2009 15:21

x post See, it is a good idea!

deanychip · 21/02/2009 15:23

ok, i know what you are saying and i know that there are people out there who do this kind of thing but i cant be trusted to even sew name tags into garments..so im not sure that my "creations" would pass as anything but crap, and would wind up costing me allot of money to put right.
so although i am giggling at the thought of me with a needle and cotton...tis not a good idea for the chip houshold, but thanks x

dye the old ones? get washing machine dye and chuck the whole lot in?

shonaspurtle · 21/02/2009 15:27

Do you know anyone who would do it for a bottle of wine and a take out then, because it doesn't take long if you've got a sewing machine.

(I know, I know - but I've never bought curtains in my life [skinflint] so I wouldn't know where to go to get the best deal. Think of this post as bumping for you )

Nontoxic · 21/02/2009 15:32

Sorry for the hijack - but littlelamb, where is this woman of whom you speak?
Last time I had curtains made it cost an absolute fortune and we don't even like them but have to stick with them to get our money's worth.

Sidge · 21/02/2009 15:34

Argos do curtains, and depending on the size you need they aren't hideously expensive. Obviously not as good as gettinga seamstress to make you made to measure lined ones but we find they are good for just bunging up!

have a look here

littlelamb · 21/02/2009 15:43

In Exeter, but you didn't hear that from me The fabric shop is a really fab one, it looks teeny from outside but goes on forever (I suspect some tardis-like trickery) and the woman who sewed them was the lovely lovely lady from a retro furniture shop in town- she makes her own cushions and things from vintage material, all while sat in her shop so it was no trouble (or so she would have me believe!) I am v envious of dd's curtains and actually this thread has reminded me that I was going to treat myself to a new pair- I will be in the fabric shop on Monday Deany,I will try and take a picture of the curtains for you- no way do they look 'homemade' iyswim

Nontoxic · 21/02/2009 15:47

She sounds like a genuine treasure.

Febes · 21/02/2009 15:48

I also want curtain for my DDs room and they have to be cheap. The main problem is the drop is nearly 2 m and most only go up to 72 inches which is 6 inches too short. I don't have a sewing machine or time to make them or any sewing talent. Help!! Sorry to hijack by the way.

Nontoxic · 21/02/2009 15:50

Ikea sell basic plain cotton tab tops.

deanychip · 21/02/2009 15:53

Thanks sidge just had a quick look at Argos, much easier to buy them ready made i think.

Good prices for redy made curtains.

MayorNaze · 21/02/2009 15:58

ooh yes another vots for ikes. they only come full length but include wonderweb in the package so you just have to snip and stick to the length you want.

DuffyMoon · 21/02/2009 16:51

Dunelm Mill ??? very reasonable

serenity · 21/02/2009 16:59

Febes, IKEA ones come as a standard 3m drop so more than long enough.

Pixel · 21/02/2009 17:18

We've got the Argos value calico ones as we didn't want to spend a fortune on curtains for a rented house and the landlord's ones were threadbare (and hideous!). I'm pleasantly surprised as they are actually nice and thick and don't need liners or anything, unlike the more expensive Thomas ones I treated ds to.

Only thing is, I was too lazy to iron them before I put them up, thinking the creases would drop out but they haven't so they will have to come down again at some point, ie if I can ever be bothered!
