Whist searching for a site for Angelbabes nappies (honest!)I accidentally ended up on a porn site. I moved away immediately, but somehow it has installed some software on my computer that I can't get rid of! Firstly there is an icon on my desktop that says"Adult chat" and I've tried deleting it, but each time I reboot the computer there it is again! Secondly, there is a web page "wethere.com" that keeps setting itself as my home page every time the computer is rebooted.

What do I do? Dh has seen the adult chat icon on the desktop and now thinks I've been indulging in his absence- I think i can persuade him that I haven't, but how do I get rid? I'm tempted to wipe the hard drive, but I imagine there's an easier way!

try installing adaware from this site www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and running it. Probably will get rid of it.

Otherwise their is an even better programme but I need to go and find out what it is called...

I installed Adaware6 and deleted everything it found, rebooted the computer and it's still there

Try doing a system restore.
It should be in program files, under accessories.
You can go back to a date before you went on the site.
Don't know if it will work but it's worth a try.
Often works for me .

I can never remember the proper name for it, just had to ask DH, I always call it a time warp.

Who would have thought cloth nappies could get you into so much trouble!

Hope you get rid of it, we have had similar problems in the past with dirty e-mails installing things on our machine, don't ask me how DH got rid of them though!

SoupDragon · 05/04/2003 15:23

Don't EVER visit clangers.com It was a nasty shock to me I can tell you!

I have just had the same problem with the Adult Chat icon. I did suspect that my dh had been 'exploring' sites (which did not please me)or more worryingly that my 3yr old had been experimenting with searches. I finally got rid of it by simply right clicking on the icon and it then let me uninstall it. Both dh and ds swear innocence by the way and hearing your story perhaps I should believe them.

AnnieMo · 05/04/2003 20:04

That should have been my 13 year old! A pretty clever 3 yr old to be able to search on the computer!

Not too long ago, my DH used to use NASA as a sample website in his training rooms. This address is of course nasa.gov. However, one day he typed in nasa.com (as you do) and his back was turned away from the screen at the front of the class displaying the website, and wondered why everyone was sniggering - it turned out that nasa.com (at the time) was the North American Spanking Association's website!!! (no longer - it got taken down)...

being a teacher... i allowed some pupils to look for information on the brazillian football team... google search... a site that mentioned it had pics of the brazillian footballl team... (you would think we would be safe wouldn't you!) i turn to work with some children... hear cries of Miss! Miss!... lo and behold... an eyefull of naked 'ladies' with the brazillian football kit.... jeeeuuuuusssstttt! about on!... sigh!

Just wondering if this nanny software you can get to protect your children and limit their searches would prevent these things installing themselves. Anyone tried them?

Ghosty · 08/04/2003 09:38

bea ... our IT department at my old school where I used to work had something that blocked things like that ... don't know what it was though ... the head of IT installed it ... You should be able to set something up to stop that happening ...
Snicker ... LOL ....

Katherine We tried the nanny thing with aol, for my son who was 9 at the time. But we found it useless, in that it restricted the sites he was able to use so much that he had to keep logging on as me. It seemed to include only the sites it expected kids to use, rather than exclude the specifically unsuitable ones IYKWIM. So he could see the Leeds Utd site but not Dulwich Hamlet, he could see stuff about S Club but not some obscure rock bands he liked. It wasnt dodgy stuff, just anything mildly out of the ordinary that wasexcluded. So now he has general access but I DO WORry that he will find something horrible by mistake.
