MIL seemed quite chuffed that she'd offered DD tea or coffee, DD chose coffee and then drunk it. I wasn't sure whether to be concerned or not. What do you think? It was weak milky coffee apparently.
TIA

Wouldn't worry to much - but if you've got plans for an early night - they're out the window!

peachface · 10/02/2009 18:13

Prob won't have done her too much harm as a one off but really needs to be discouraged for the future! One wonders sometimes if MIL's did actually lose their memory from when they had children!

Dh gave ds2 a glass of red bull equvilent (completly by accident) when he was 4.Didn't do him any harm. However it cause quite a lot of harm to dh's ears after I'd finished screaming at him

LynetteScavo · 10/02/2009 18:39

Hmmm...hopefully it was decaf.

Granny sometimes gives my DCs very weak tea.

2pt4kids · 10/02/2009 18:40

I give my 3 yr old tea if he asks when I am having a cup, but I do his in a 'special' tea cup which is just an espresso size cup.
Could you ask your MIL to give your DD tiny portion like that if she does it again?

LadyOfWaffle · 10/02/2009 18:40

I doubt it would be harmful but she may have a caffine high for a while!

mckenzie · 10/02/2009 19:13

she's just gone to bed but did have a mad half hour before she settled. Hopefully that will be it though as we have babysitters arriving now for DH and I to go out. DS (7) drinks decaf tea occasionally but we make it very very weak and milky.
oops, spoke to soon. DD has just appeared!!! Is this a coincidence or is it the coffee?????

well planned - get child all caffienated up, leave for baby sitter to deal with

mckenzie · 10/02/2009 22:39

back now and babysitters assure me she was good as gold and they haven't heard a noise out of her at all. Still, I might have a gentle word with MIL when I see her next and request no more coffee .

I drank coffee at that age - I can't quite believe it really but it must have been fairly normal then (40 years ago! )

timmette · 11/02/2009 18:12

I think this is pretty normal my mil gave all her kids tea and coffee at that age very milky - more like dirty water if you know what I mean and I let her give my son it - since it's not every day and it's something he does with his Oma. It won't hurt.

puffling · 11/02/2009 23:22

MILs are obsessed with giving children tea and coffee. Every time I see MIL, she asks 'Have you tried her on tea?' Why would I have? Is it something to do with rationing in the 50s?

'It isn't great' etc. why did you start giving it to dcs then??

minko · 15/02/2009 20:06

I was a regular tea drinker at that age, with breakfast and tea every day, and some coffee at the weekends. Never did me any harm. Not so far as I know anyway!
