She is 14 weeks old, we got her 3 weeks ago and hve managed to toilet train her, teach her to sit, wait and leave so she is not daft. The problem is the minute we put the lead on her she plonks herself down and refuses to move! We live in a quiet street but a busy road not far away so it is a must. Have tried her in the house and garden but to no avail, help??

maybe take it a bit more slowly, perhaps ply her with treats and let her just wear the collar and lead in and around the house without you being attached to the other end of it?

is she big, could you carry her somewhere interesting (with lead attached) and plonk her down in the midst of some interesting smells? (scraping barrel a bit here!)

interested in this .
our pup, is fine boucing around the garden, a tiring walk (pull)when out on the walk but really resistant to going from the front door to the bottom of the lane. Its a quiet road ,even a longish front garden, no bad experiences that we know about.

Its as if the idea of leaving the house is the problem.

how about scattering treats on the ground in a trail leading forward?

or just stand still and wait for ages and ages and ages?

All of our three dogs have been like this as puppies. The youngest dog was dreadful as she would just lie down and refuse to move and you eventually had to just pick her up and carry her which was very inconvenient as she is no lightweight. We got them harnesses in case it was because they didn't like the feeling of a collar and lead pulling on their necks, which seemed to help a bit and were just persistent and patient. In time they started to realise that going for walks was a nice thing and now if you mention the word 'walk' they get all excited and run to find their leads.

I think for some puppies going out and about can be a bit frightening and a bit of a sensory overload. With experience and encouragement they should eventually get over this.

With our pups we had lightweight collar and leads and put the lead on them in the house. At first they were a bit puzzled but eventually they realised that if they wanted to go anywhere the lead would have to go with them! It was pretty quick, istr. The worst bit was stopping them accidentally weeing on the loose lead.

Thanks everyone, it was a slip lead we had for her so I went and bought her a collar today, she did the same thing at first but now bounding about (and scratching furiously at it). Will try her in garden with lead tomorrow without me holding it. She is a Dogue de Bordeaux so will be quite big, I am 22 weeks pg so lifting not ideal. She has gone to the park without the lead so it's not a question of insecurity, more a question of being a bit unsure and a wee bit stubborn I think, ha, she will learn!!
