We have found a couple of dead ones in the garden recently and today went to clear the back shed out.

By the looks of things we have a major infestation. 4 rat holes in the ground and tons of banked up dirt that they have dug up in one corner which is a massive hole down into the ground

On top of that everything is covered in rat pee and they have used our TENT as bedding and ripped it to shreads.

Just looked on the council website and they charge if you are not on benefits, anybody have any idea how much it would be?

Herefordshire charge £40.

Whatever your council charges, it's bound to be less than a private company. Worth calling the council Pest Control dept to find out prices, plus they may be able to give you advice over the phone - such as removing food sources / bedding sources, setting your own traps / bait boxes.

Get rid of your shed. Burn it and everything in it. It is no doubt saturated with urine and that can cause a very serious lethal illness called Weils Disease (also known as Leptospirosis). Do not allwo contact with cust or broken skin, lips or eyes and keep kids and pets away. Wash thoroughly your whole body after you have cleared the site and wah everything you have worn as well. Disinfect all boots and tools.

Fill in the holes with broken glass and put a concrete pad down at least 10 cm thick before putitng a new shed on it with no void space under it.

Sheds with void space underneath or decking are absolute rat nurseries.

Had a lot on my Dad's farm. You need to get rid of whatever attracts them not just put poison down. They wil go away if you take away the thing that they are eating or living in.
