Can anyone tell me wear I can find a pair of trendy looking jeans that fit on the waist, rather than below it. After having two children and giving up smoking, my stomach area is something which I would rather keep covered up, but all the jeans and trousers I have tried on lately seem to do up well below the belly button. Help!!!

Debenham's Trader jeans used to fit at the waist. My Gap Boot Cut jeans fit about an inch below my belly button, covering up the worst of the pregnancy damage They have the advantage of being US sizes too so I'm an 8

spacemonkey · 01/04/2003 17:49

FWIW Trinny and Susannah say that if you have a bit of a bulgy tummy, the lower cut trousers and skirts are more flattering ...

I've bought pairs from Next & Principles during the winter which both fit on or just above belly button level.

T & S also recommend buying a size bigger than normal so they look flatteringly big - a hard thing for most of us to do I should think

gingernut · 01/04/2003 19:00

Yep, M&S do some that fit on the waist, but I'm not sure you'd describe them as particularly trendy looking

Tinker · 01/04/2003 19:23

Aaaagh! This is my real bugbear. HATE my flabby belly overspilling.

Have spied some in La Redoute which sound better but not tried them out.

Snap SoupDragon re Gap jeans, like being a size 8. Sadly I painted a floor in mine.......

Nutjob · 01/04/2003 19:30

Thanks for your suggestions girls. I currently have a pair of Next jeans which do up sort of on the belly button line, but I couldn't wear a short top with them - it would look hideous!! Another thing I hate about low-cut trousers is I seem incapable of bending over for any task (picking up children, making the beds etc) without creating a builder's bum - GROSS!!!

I've got a couple of really nice pairs from Tesco that enables you to 'tuck in' your flab. Only about 20 quid a pair too!

SoupDragon · 01/04/2003 20:38

I don't think the really low cut ones are menat for anything practical like picking up children M&S do special "low rise" knickers though so you can wear low cut trousers without flaunting your underwear.

myalias · 01/04/2003 21:05

I've got a lovely pair of red herring jeans, you can get them from Debenhams direct catalogue or instore. They are slightly low slung and they are in a stretch material, ideal for fat attack days. I think the key to wearing low slung or hipsters is to wear a thong, it hides the crack, IFYKWIM. There is nothing worse than a female builders bum.

Myalias - apart from an ACTUAL builders bum of course...

soyabean · 01/04/2003 21:51

Connected to this, what about slightly longer than 'normal', but not frumpy, tops/T shirts? I am tallish and just dont want even a centimeter of flesh between the top of my jeans and the bottom of my T shirt. But the longer length Ts i have seen tend to be hideous shapeless things in bhs etc eek. I find Levis and gap stretch bootcut jeans OK, and my other jeans are men's, which seem to suit my shape better (ie cover the tummy)

Twink · 01/04/2003 22:21

Also connected, why did the perfect pair of pale stripy jeans I found in Next not fit me ?? Perfect fit on bum & waist (!) I'm their standard 5'5", 29 " leg and yet even with my 2.5" heel boots they dragged the floor by about 2" - I don't want wet, fraying trousers nor do I want to have to wear heeled boots in the summer just to try to keep the flaming things looking ok. Agggg!

SueW · 01/04/2003 22:27

I am currently wearing a pair of M&S kickflare jeans, with lycra that do up just below the waist. I was delighted to find them as I am sick of hipster jeans and tops that don't meet them.

They are on the M&S website product code 5905102.

tigermoth · 01/04/2003 23:44

Top Shop do a variety of different jeans styles in a comfortable and IMO flattering stretch denim fabric. They must be trendy considering the average age of the shoppers.

Top Shop also do a 'tall' range and a 'petit' range of clothing. I buy t shirts from the 'tall' range, even though I am of average height, just to ensure my tummy is properly covered.

Jzee · 02/04/2003 09:15

Try levis 525's - my old favourites! They are not hipsters and very comfortable especially in the stretch denim - boot cut, but not excessive if you know what I mean?

Nutjob · 02/04/2003 11:29

Thanks Jzee, think I will nip down to Madhouse and try a pair. Will let you know...!!

OP posts:
Jzee · 02/04/2003 12:27

oh, should have mentioned that they were a bit tricky to come by so I ended up getting them in the Levis shop on Regent St, but madhouse is worth a try.

I always buy M&S jeans these days. They do boot cut and kick flare high waisted and also come in different lengths.

Caroline5 · 02/04/2003 21:16

Off thread, but I find that all the Next trousers for girls are cut in a certain way that they always give dd a "builder's bum" too! (and she is slim with no tummy!) Must be their cut rather than everyone's physique.

crystaltips · 02/04/2003 21:26

I don't mind showing a ) my knickers or b) my builders bum, but I will not ( WILL NOT ) show anyone my waist/s

Tetley · 02/04/2003 21:43

Another recommendation for Next jeans - the 'classic' style fit just on the waist and are straight leg - so flattering whatever your shape!

Bozza · 02/04/2003 22:35

Twink totally agree. I've spent ages trying to find a pair of trousers that I could wear with my trainers. Finally found some cords in Next to Nothing which I have purchased but was a bit annoyed that the one size was too small and the next size too big. Got the bigger ones so am being true to Trinny and Susannah - especially as they are quite low waisted. Not convinced about all that though.
