to be fair I have starved myself and gone to the gym every other day.

I would do whatever you are comfortable with, if you prefer to take an alternative, insist that your GP takes this seriously and gives you sensible options?

Hulababy · 08/04/2005 21:21

I have used Microgynon for years with no side effects at all.

I first had marvelon (at age 16 - 1990) bt then there was that blod clot scare - and it was then I was put onto Microgynon instead. I then continued using it until I decided to TTC (in 1999), and then again for just over 2 years after DD was born until 8 months ago (when started TTC again).

Only reason for putting on weight in that tie for me was eating too much at times. But I have also been very slim on it too. Never suffere from migranes and headaches either.

binkybetsy · 08/04/2005 21:24

Mood swings were horrendous and got so many headaches it was unreal.

80sMum · 08/04/2005 21:46

I used to take Microgynon and had no problems with weight or anything else. It's been around for decades (I started taking it in 1978).

karenanne · 08/04/2005 21:53

firstly let me say all the contraceptive pills affect people in different ways or not at all.

but having said that i was on microgynon for years before having m kids and was fine with it but after having my ds went back on it and it turned me into a monster.lol.i had contstant severe pmt and bad headaches for about a week before my weeks break.it affected me so badly i had to come off of it.
after i had stopped taking it i did a search on the web and found quite a few women had had the same type of problems on it.having said that there are women that are fine on it.

i would check witha gp or pharmicist before taking it though with other medication your on though.

Demented · 08/04/2005 21:59

I've been on Marvelon and Microgynon and can't for certain say which one I was on at the time (it was when DS1 was about 9 months old) but I stopped taking it as I was seriously about to knife my DH had to put one hand over the hand with the knife in it and force myself to put it down. I felt very unpredictable and had psychotic tendancies. I stopped taking it immediately and within a few days started to feel better, explained this to the Practice Nurse who advice that I stay away from hormonal contraceptives.

Elf1981 · 08/04/2005 22:01

I was first given Dianette when I was 16 to help with my skin. Came off it when split up with my ex. Went back to doctors when met my now DH, was given Microgynon. Perfectly fine with me. TBH, I'm overweight anyway, but I didn't pile more on with the microgynon. I was on it whilst planning my wedding and lost two stone while on WW diet, so it can't be that bad.
Easiest bet is to try it for a month and see how you go. It's hard to judge on others opinions as every pill affects every person in a different way.

HelloMama · 08/04/2005 22:17

microgygnon is one of the lowest dose pills available and it is one of the oldest, most researched pills, so for most women it is a good pill to start on. NO hormonal contraception will make you put on weight - but it will act as an appetite stimulant in SOME women. So, if you feel hungry when taking it, and start snacking, you will start to weigh more! But, if this happens to you, if you try to curb your appetite and continue eating as you always have, then you will not put weight on. At the end of the day, if you become pregnant (exactly what the pill is trying to prevent) then you are GUARANTEED to put weight on...

All methods of hormonal contraception, be it pills, injections, Mirena or Implants can affect mood (or cause reversible low mood) again, in SOME women. The leaflet inside the pack has to point out all of these factors, even if they have happened very rarely to only a few women. The pill should not be given to very obese women because of an increased risk of a blood clot (very rare), but you have to be very obese.

For every method of contraception, there is a woman whose friend's, mother's, sister's, aunt, granny's, daughter had a problem / serious side-effect with it, IYSWIM. This pill has been given to you and you will need to try taking it with an open mind and see how you get on. If you choose to take it, you will need to give it 3 months for any minor side-effects, like nausea and breast tenderness to settle down, but these are normal things to have at first and they don't tend to last. Of course if you are really not happy to take it, go back to your clinic and discuss your concerns, but i can assure you it is one of the safest pills available. However, the reason why there are so many pills available is because no one-pill type suits everyone. Sometimes you have to try each type to find out what will suit you best, and, no-offence to anyone else, but try not to listen to how it affected your friends or any other woman, you need to see for yourself. Phew! that was looooong! HTH

Linnet · 08/04/2005 23:13

I've been on microgynon for years, since before dd1 was born, so it must be about 9 years now. I've never had a problem with it. I've never gained weight with it and haven't suffered migraines because of it either.

But everyone is different as this thread shows, some people haven't had a problem others have.

SPARKLER1 · 08/04/2005 23:17

I'm taking Microgynon and have been for years too. No problems at all with any side effects. I am overweight - but am pretty sure it's down to eating far too much crap and not the pill!! I am also on anti-depressants (Citilopram) and GP has said that there is no problem with me taking them both together.

Evesmama · 09/04/2005 21:02

wow thanks for all those replies girls

am going to see doc on monday as i really dont feel comfortable taking it judging by the leaflet inside and other comments on here.
i know everyones different, but there are so many people jsut posting on here that have said frightening things! so would rather speak with gp as i could handle feeling more crap or putting more weight on!, saying that, it could happen with any pill i get couldnt it??...so confused!

Hi Evesmama.

AFAIK microgynon is virtually identical to ovranette - same formulation but different manufacturer - maybe HelloMama could confirm this, so I wouldn't have thought that it would cause any different side effects.

I have been on microgynon twice (first time for about 4 years), second time for a year (still taking it). I found it very good apart from withdrawal headaches. If anything I found it helped with depression/OCD as it stopped me getting PMT. The hormone progestogen which is in the pill and the mini-pill could possibly aggravate depression, but IME it is more of a problem with the mini-pill than the pill.

Never found that microgynon had any effect on weight gain with me, or appetite.

make sure you're using contraception even if you don't choose to restart the pill (well unless you want no 2!)

mummytosteven · 09/04/2005 21:10

see this from netdoctor.co.uk which says that microgynon is the same as ovranette:

Evesmama · 09/04/2005 21:11

erm...definatly not MTS

thankyou for your advice. i dont have the leaflet from overannette, so it helps that i now know they are so alike!!!

oh..what to do???
should have taken it yesterday if i was taking it as was not supposed to have a break after last pill???

OP posts:
jjash · 09/04/2005 21:13

Sorry to add to the confusion but i take it no problems at all.Have done for 2 1/2 years .Hasnt made my past depression flare up and has helped my bad periods .

Branster · 09/04/2005 21:22

I've been taking it for nearly 10 years now (with about 3 yr break when ttc, pregnant & BFing).
Absolutely fine for me, no side effects whatsoever and not a bit of fat anywhere on me. If anything, I put on weight when I was not using it.
So it clearly works differently for everyone but if you have any kind of doubt I'd say don't take it and ask your GP for advice.

mummytosteven · 09/04/2005 21:34

i reckon tbh as they are so much the same that you'ld be fine with just the seven day break - am sure when they changed me from microgynon to ovranette they didn't tell me to do anything different. but spose for the sake of caution use alternative contraception till you start taking it and for seven days after (i.e err on the side of caution until GP says otherwise or see what HelloMama says - she's a sexual health/family planning nurse IIRC).

starshaker · 09/04/2005 21:54

just to cheer u up i was on ovranete and was moved onto that pill im now 9 months pregnant so i can say it didnt work for me

Evesmama · 09/04/2005 21:58

why dont you all just terrify me!!

OP posts:
HelloMama · 10/04/2005 15:47

evesmama, they are the same pill, its just a different brand name - the ingredients are the same though. You could start taking the pill now or you could wait until the end of your 7 day break and start taking it on whatever day you normally start your pill. I would always say use condoms for 7 days when changing brands just as a precaution, although its VERY unlikely you would be at risk of pregnancy, as long as you re-started on the correct day. Ovranette has now been discontinued so you won't be able to get it again, so i would advise you to at least give Microgynon a try and see how you get on. As it is a 2nd generation pill, it really is one of the safest available. As you will see from the mixed responses here, some people love it and some people hated it. It would be the same mixed bag whatever brand of pill or other contraception you chose, as every woman is different.

Evesmama · 10/04/2005 22:16

thanks hellomamma
i am gonna give it a go and will take it at the end of my break as i would with my old pill.
i am worried about some of the concerns on here, but i suppose, ill have to give one a go so might as well start with this!
do you have any idea why overannette has been discontinued??
and thanks for your help
