Hello ladies,
Today my mum found DS (19m) on top of the cot almost climbing over it. Then my DH and I tried him in the afternoon and apparently he is able to climb over, I mean if we allowed him he would leave himself and fall. DH and I have been trying to find a solution all day but couldn't find a way to prevent any accidents. Please help! Very urgent. He is in the cot at the moment but we keep checking him and don't know how we are going to sleep tonight.
xx
Margo

If can climb out of cot at lowest base position I'd think he's going to be safer in a bed .

4andnotout · 01/02/2009 23:12

Is it a cot bed? Could you not put him in a low bed with a bed guard? Other than that, how about a sleepingbag to limit his climbing abilities?

nancy75 · 01/02/2009 23:13

put pillows/cushions on the floor around the cot, sort out getting him a bed tomorrow! dd did this and eventually she fell out, it frightened the life out of her and she didnt do it again for a while but she was fine. we put her in a cot bed soon after.

girlandboy · 01/02/2009 23:14

I put the dropside down on dd's cot when she did this, and then she at least didn't have so far to drop. Then a stairgate across her door!

margobambino · 01/02/2009 23:31

Yes, he is climbing out of it at a lowest base position. It is boori classic and seems quite deep actually, but my hyper little monkey a bit big for his age.
Yes we have a cotbed but we were thinking that he was a bit young for a bed. If he wakes up at night would it be safe for him to wander around? Stairgate to the door is a good idea but what if he climbs over it too? Girlandboy, has your ever DD tried that? Are they higher than a cotbed?
Any advice re the bedguard? Which one is better? I need to buy one first thing tomorrow, it seems.

My dd3 is in a full size single bed with a bed guard on and is only 16 months, she has been in it for about a month already as she hated her cot.
We have a stairgate at her door and i would say it is fairly climb proof, she certainly cant get any purchase on it to climb over!

Could you not put the cot matress on the floor,as a temporary measure.Remove any breakable items from room, ensure covers on sockets......

feedthegoat · 01/02/2009 23:38

I would have thought wandering round safer than falling. You'll just have make sure the room is cleared of anything you wouldn't want him to have unsupervised. I never managed to find a bed rail to fit my mamas and papas cot bed (mattress width was too narrow) so ds ended up going straight in it with duvet on floor to break fall. He fell out couple of times a night for a couple of weeks but didn't even wake up most of the time. Good luck with it!

margobambino · 01/02/2009 23:50

4andnotout, which stairgate is it? I mean which brand?

DS1 did this. A friend gave us this wonderful canopy typy thing that zips. I made a big deal with ds1 about making a moon and stars and putting glitter on them, then sewed them to the top on the inside. He loved it! He would even look at me after getting in and say "Zip it Mommy" lol.

gigglewitch · 02/02/2009 00:15

omg - my ds2 was one of those climbers too - could get out of anything and everything. we put him in a bog-standard single bed at 20mo - after a short stretch of co-sleeping purely so we knew where he was
absolute nightmare, isnt it?! ditch the cot asap, even if it is for a ready-bed type thing or something!

abbierhodes · 02/02/2009 00:19

I agree with waht others have said about putting him in a bed. Also suggest teaching him to climb stairs safely too. The sooner he can do stairs the sooner you'll rest easy! Mine have never climbed stairgates by the way.

seeker · 02/02/2009 00:27

Put the mattress on the floor - then he can't fall any further.

Then go out tomorrow and buy a futon. Cots are not compulsory, you know!

gigglewitch · 02/02/2009 00:34

take a look
(my boys weren't able to get out of these... lol! unfortunately dd was more cunning)

Clement · 02/02/2009 00:43

OMG, at 12 months! Thanks mrsjammi, I am feeling better now.
I was planning to convert his cot to low bed and buy a bed guard and an extra tall safety gate, but I think it would be much easier if I can find that tent. I haven't been able to go out for shopping yet because of the weather.

I found this on ebay but the picture wouldn't load so I'm not sure if it's the same as mine. We have the crib tent by Tots in Mind but as we are in the US I'm not sure if that one is available in the UK or not. I had thought it would be from Amazon but can't find it there. It really is a brilliant idea.

I hope you can find one. If not, I'll see if I can find ours. We moved a few months ago and may have given it away though.
