Needing info on Ely...

Hi there,

Due to job changes my family and me are relocating to Cambridgeshire and really like the look of Ely. I've been trying to find out a bit of information on areas to avoid if we were to buy a house down there and was wondering if anyone had any info at all? I have so far heard of High Barns as somewhere to avoid but I am not too sure why, nothing specific has come up. I've seen that there is a school, Spring Meadow Infant and Nursery School and it's last Ofsted report was good. Can anyone tell me any more on High Barns, and anywhere else in Ely if possible?

Many thanks,

Kristy

We moved from Lincolnshire to a village just outside Ely 4 years ago. Spring Meadow had a good reputation then, and I've not heard anything since to say its changed.

From what I know if it (never having lived there), High Barns does have a bit of a reputation for trouble, but afaik in isolated pockets. You could subscribe to the Ely Standard online, and see what the news is like. There are some really lovely places not too far from the centre that always look nice. I like Ely.

no actual info on Ely, I live in a village about 15mins away, and my parents one about 8 mins away.
Train to Cambridge for commuting is good.

Thank you for answering, that's really helpful. I have started thinking about Littleport as it's more affordable, I know someone who used to live there etc, but it brings in the whole "2 car family" issue which my dh has always been keen to avoid because of £££!

You might want to know about this:

Littleport contamination

I think the developers are supposed to be clearing it all up now, but even so...

Blimey, thanks for that, that's a bit scary. Needs an Erin Brockovich character to come along by the sounds of it.

I just put Littleport into Rightmove and found one on that close for 140kodd, and it had 4 pictures, 3 of which were the garden from different angles, all showing a perfectly mown garden and no plants or anything, just a perfectly green mowed lawn. Quite interesting given that article...

I personally would stay away from littleport!
Ely on the other hand is lovely, highbarns is a place to not put to high on your list, as is the centre. just because you do get a high propotion of teenagers and young people athering at night and especially at weekends, due to the high number of pubs in the centre.

I would look at downham road area, and also the new builds down by the river. ehremonunt street and that area is alos nice to live in. The estate where the RAf hospital used to be is also nice and there is some lovely roads up thier, (littleport road i think its called). It depends really how far in the town you want to live. every is walkable though.

Pubs to avoid, are the town house & the minister.

Shopping is ok, lots of places to eat, and drink etc and it does have some nice shops.

HTH< and good luck

That's really helpful, thank you so much. It's really feeling like a blindfolded search because I'm up here with the kids while my dh works down there and there's just so little we can do until we see what kind of interest we get in our house. It's a really frustrating waiting game, so any info like this keeps me going a bit really.

Thanks,

Kristy

Hi!
Does anyone know anything about Chiefs Street in Ely? I’m thinking of moving there, but I’m worried about it having antisocial behaviour, as there seems to be a large flat/social housing complex there (Bakers Corner) one of which has been the subject of closure orders for antisocial behaviour. Can anyone reassure me that the area is quiet and nice, or indeed let me know if it’s horrible and I need to avoid it?
Thanks, just really don’t want to live there if it’s grim/noisy. I have a small little girl.
