My Guinea Pig Died this morning...............

How can we get so attached to such little hairy creatures............

We found her just lying in her straw - only 6 months old. We think a wild rat that got in her cage some months ago took a nip out of her (as she was trying to protect her sisters!!) She had a little bite wound which healed up and she seemed completely over it physically but emotionally I think it shook her up - she always seemed to be guarding her sisters.

Anyway, we'll never know if that had anything to do with it. My dcs were bereft - we all shed some tears and then some. Probably hard to understand unless you've had some of these little critters that grab your heart.

We all had a hold of her little body and cut some of her lovely ginger hair for keeping and wrapped her in some soft paper with some straw and buried her near her sisters cage so they will always be close together.

I'm sure fellow piggy keepers will understand the sadness.

So sorry for your loss.

I syringe-fed a baby guinea every two hours... I know how they can tug at your heart strings.

I'm watching ours now scurrying in and out of a cardboard box, can't imagine how you all felt. Best wishes to you and your dc's.

Thank you catMandu.

I know they do pine for each other when one dies but at least the last two have each other. Everyone else has gone out of the house this afternoon so I'm sat here watching the other two and keep getting them out for cuddles.

One thing I'm glad I did is let the dcs (11 and 9) see and hold our little dead piggy. I wasn't quite sure if they would but thought it would be good for them (closure and all that) and it was heartbreaking but my boy hugged the little thing and they both said proper goodbyes before we buried her and I really think that helped them.

I still think we will have some tears tonight though when they start thinking about her.
