How much should it cost to have mirror wills drawn up?

Dh and I had a lady round from a company to give us a quote for wills, we were shocked at the price. £185 each will and extras for Powers of Attorney and Will safe. Does this sound reasonable? The crazy thing is tthat we don't have anything of value to leave, we just want to do it to specify who would look after our dc if the worst were to happen.
Any thoughts/experience would be much appreciated.

Our mirror wills cost £450 but ours were complicated by the fact we had to include a trust provision for disabled DD2.

£370 sounds quite a lot - what sort of company was it?

wrinklytum · 28/01/2009 21:30

I am in the process of getting mirror will drwawn up.Ours is slightly more complex as dd has sn and will need sonmeone to manage her affairs lifelong. We have been charged £320 before VAT.

EldonAve · 28/01/2009 21:30

sounds too much to me
have you tried a local solicitor?

TaurielTest · 28/01/2009 21:32

possibly no help to you, but ours were free through my trade union...

ShowOfHands · 28/01/2009 21:32

Ours was straightforward. About £100 and £30 for storage.

Hulababy · 28/01/2009 21:36

Please use a proper solicitor and not a will writing company for your wills. DH makes way more money sorting out these badly drawn up will wiritng wills, and DIY wills, than he would for drawing up a proper will int he first place.

I know DH chares about £150 plus VAT for mirror image wills. Storage of the will is free (you really shouldn't be paying to have a will stored for you!).

Lasting Powers of Attorney are extra and are expensive. Tax planning would be extra too, but majority of people no longer require tax planning wills due to changes more recently.

Thanks for responses there seems to be a wide variation.
showofhands- who did yours?

The lady we saw was from affinity wills.

Have aked him for fees for a trust will for such cases as suggested and he says, depending on complexity, about £350 plus VAT

ilovesummer · 28/01/2009 21:37

Hulababy is that £150 x2 or just £150 for both?

ilovesummer - DH says your qute is completely a rip off.

If they go bust chances are your will is lost

It is likely to not be a solictor writing your will.

If anything goes wrong you have no come back or insurance, unlike a solicitor will have.

Hulababy · 28/01/2009 21:40

£150 forboth, plus VAT on top (so about £172 inc VAT)

EldonAve · 28/01/2009 21:40

msn thread google cached version mentions affinity wills
they don't sound great tbh

ilovesummer · 28/01/2009 21:43

There are no trusts. who should i go to then? a local solicitor? we feel a bit out of our depth.

I got theyellow pages and rang round a load of solicitors who mentioned probate in their ads.

I think some places will give you a free half hour consultation.

As others said, worth getting done properly, for the sake of a few extra quid.

stardazzle · 28/01/2009 21:44

I'd recommend hulababy's hubby, he did ours and was much better than the first copany we used, he asked us questions we hadn't even considered.

Hulababy · 28/01/2009 21:45

Ideally a solicitor yes, and preferably one who specialises in this area of law.

Which area are you in? DH may be able to recommend a firm locally to you perhaps?

Many solicitors, such as DH, will do wills ia email and telephone instructions too. DH has done wills for MNetters in the past in this way. So, if you can get a good recommendation, even if not local to you, they may be able to help too.

tibni · 29/01/2009 13:36

Sorry to highjack but hulababy does your dh have knowledge of will writing when SEN children are involved? I asked on SEN thread and was pointed toward you

Hulababy · 29/01/2009 17:28

I believe so yes. I can ask him when home for definite. But he has done all manner of wills and trusts for different situations, and helps look after peoples trusts later on too.

Am at dd's piano lesson at moment so on mobile and hard to type fully. Will be home later, will ask dh and post again.

Hulababy · 29/01/2009 19:33

tibni - yes he does. He has done many wills for such situations and involving a range of different disabilities, both physical and otherise, and differeing degrees of autism, etc.

ilovesummer · 29/01/2009 20:16

Hulababy - where abouts are you, we are in Cambridgeshire.

OP posts:
Hulababy · 29/01/2009 22:04

We are in Sheffield.

Many solicitors will do a willvia email and telephone - so get a good recommendation from a friend, etc. and don't worry too much about region.

ilovesummer · 30/01/2009 13:46

thank you for all your help.
