bought a 'reduced' top in the sales a couple of weeks ago, worn it once, put it on yesterday and it had loads of tiny little holes in it-can't find any more clothes in my wardrobe like it. I can't work out if

A. It came from the store like that and i didn't notice the first time i wore it(yuck, yuck, yuck!)

B.i've been infested and my other clothes ar a feast waiting to happen

or
C.its not moths at all, just crap material, although, it does look unlikely.

So-if its either A or B, are my clothes destined to turn to rags? It is a dark walk in wadrobe by the way, and dp has his instructions that he's going to give it a bit of a uplift over the weekend!

if it's moths, they like wool best so have a look there first for holes and dusty-looking worm casts
it is gross but you have to do it - we've had them TWICE and I lost loads of stuff

catMandu · 27/01/2009 21:34

sorry to hijack, but jkklpu - what did you do to get rid of them?

NeedCoffee · 27/01/2009 21:40

i don't think i've got any wool really, not thats been in my wardrobe, to be honest, most of my clothes are synthetic so maybe they'll move out!

b i think. not sure what the life cycle of a larvae is but they have hatched and gorn if you have holes. moths lay their eggs on the clothes for them to eat.

if you have anything very precious then bung it in freezer for a couple of days.

otherwise then just move clothes around, empty all drawers / wardrobes and hoover twice a year. not as bad as it sounds, honest.

You can buy excellent clothes moth traps - they use pheromones to lure the little buggers out. Dry-cleaning anything which is wool will also zap the eggs and larvae.

OK thank you for all the replies, was going to go shout at the store tomorrow! Will spend it clearing clothes out instead, oh joy.

catMandu - sorry, only just back online: went through everything and chucked out the stuff that was beyond recovery and had other stuff dry-cleaned. Bought some mothballs but then realised that it wasn't great to have them in a room where adults sleep, let alone a baby (was when ds2 was still in with us). So, did some resaearch online and got some cedar balls and other cedar-based products. Certainly smells much nicer.
