my dd is just one and i thought that potty training does not start until about 2 but both mu mother and mil have told me that they potty trained at just over one.
is this right and is there any reason why we do it at two ish now.
i am asking as i am 13 weeks with baby number 2 and would love for dd to be out of nappoes for the arrival of number 2

2-3 is more typical . Some slightly ealrier some much later. Parenst have a habit of misremembering and may have used terries which were more of an incentive to do so. Forcing a very young child before they show any natural inclination may only lead to set backs later , especially on arrival of a sibling.

From personal experience, it is easier to have a newborn and a toddler in nappies than it is to have a baby and an unreliably trained toddler.

MrsBadger · 27/01/2009 15:48

we do it later now because our mothers / grandmothers were so desperate to stop handwashing nappies they'd try anything

if they are so eager get them to try

Leave it as long as you can! It's much much easier on child and parent if they're old enough to fully understand. I started with ds after he turned three. Girls are supposed to be quicker though.

Second soup dragon - keep first one in nappies unless THEY are determined (and talented) at coming out of them. Alternatively you can do it as I did - get no2 unreliably out of them as no3 arrives, no2 gets growled at occasionally as mummy tired, no2 decides to then show displeasure by weeing behind curtains instead every day. Eventually, no2 put back in nappies and stays in them til 3 yrs when all is calm. Clucky x p.s. I ignored no3 potty training and she did it herself, day and night dry in 2 days!! Just goes to show - the less you care and think about it, the easier it is for all!

pud they probably did EC - it's only because of the internet that it has a name! Some info here:

DD is/was 2.4, we started day after Boxing day. She was near enough there 2 weeks later. Now is fairly reliable but I still carry spare clothes just in case!

I would say don't even think about it unless LO is showing signs that they're ready.

I'm not in the 'leave as late as poss' camp because I think that different children will be ready at different times and IMHO if you run with it when your child is showing signs of being ready you are far more likely to succeed.

Dd1 potty trained at around 22 months, dd2 did her first wee in the potty (totally unprompted and practically ignored) on her 2nd birthday and dd3 has already done a couple of wee's and a poo in her potty (again totally unprompted - she asked for potty and I helped her to sit down) and she is 18 months.

Watch for the signs and go with that.

I wholeheartedly agree with Soupdragon - it is much easier to have two in nappies than a baby in nappies and an unreliably trained toddler.
