Does anyone else have a problem getting their DD to dress up? My 4 year old was invited to a Party today and she wouldn't keep the princess dress on (it was a fancy dress party)

She's never been keen on dressing up but thought she wouldn't go as far as not wanting to go to the party if she had to dress up. We let her go as her self, didn't want her to miss out.

She also doesn't like being called anything other than her name, can't say to hello beautiful, princess, angel etc. She didn't want to be an angel in the school Nativity either but did wear it as everyone else was dressed up and once on stage was very good and happy.

I don't mind if she never wants to dress up, I just wondered if this might be a phase. We've told her that it doesn't change who she is, just changes the clothes. It's like another lot of clothes like, PJ's, Dresses, trousers etc

my daughter is exactly the same!
It was her 3rd birthday last week and for her xmas present my mum brought her a sleeping beauty dress from m&s (bloody ridiculous- priced at £501)- she put it on for about 5 seconds, burst into tears and would not stop crying until I took the dress off!
But like your dd she has never been into dressing up- she wears the high hills and uses the magic wand but that is it- nothing else.
Hope this phase passes- but not sure, as my niece has been into dressing up since she could walk!
Anyone shed some light???

I don't honestly see why a child not wanting to dress up can be perceived by the parents as a problem.

I did'nt say it was a problem, and paranoidmother said 'I don't mind if she never wants to dress up'- we are just sharing stories/information about our children and being a mum.
I thought that's what this website was all about?????

Mine is now 8yo and still won't dress up. We had a few years there where she let me choose, but now??? No chance!

She chooses her own clothes at all times and I guarantee it's skinny jeans and tee shirts every time.

I suspect she'll revert to dressing up when she gets older. Either that, or she'll be a tom-boy girl instead!

It's not worrying, but it can be annoying. Especially when you see lovely dresses and outfits in the stores. And especially if you have just one child and aren't planning on having any others.

I empathise but I guess girls go either one way or another...dress up or dress down.

yeh- mine has always been a tomboy! Maybe that's because she has mostly mixed with boys- but she is only 3 so time will tell!

pscc...an m&s dress priced at £501....Bir excessive don't you think .

paranoidmother · 26/01/2009 08:18

Thank you pscc. I was only sharing and she is the only one at her Nursery who won't dress up so was wondering about the wider world more than anything.

I think my DD is lovely and normal and I don't mind her not dressing up I just don't want her to miss out on any fun.

Thanks for the comments

xx

My ds won't dress up. Never has, probably never will. I doubt it will hold him back in life. Unless he wants to be a clown, obviously.....

Dd dresses up (still, at 13) at the drop of a fishnet stocking.

My 4 year old nephew does not like to dress up, nor does he like to be called anything but his name. He will happily pretend to be animals and things but if you say 'are you a turtle' he would say 'no I'm X'. And he can get a bit upset about it.

However he is a lovely and happy boy. He has a strong sense of self I think.

oh yes DD1 is 3.1yrs and hates wearing a dress. She is quite happy in jeans and a top.
However dd2 is complete opposite and does nothing but twirl and prance about in a dress.
