Porn Pop-ups how to rid them.

Hi I wonder if you would help me.

For the past few days I have been looking at the internet and these very graphic pop-ups have been appearing, I click the X and the top right and another one appears, this happens about 6 times before they eventually close.

I am with NTL world broadband, It is only me and my son (aged 3) living here so it is not as if someone else has access to it.

I was in the middle of reading mumsnet this morning and answered the door to my mum, only for her to look at me and give me a dirty look, I looked at my screen and they had popped up again. tried to explain but she knows nothing about computers.

It is annoying now, but what happens when my son is older and looking on it, I do not want this to happen.

I do get things through on the internet saying if you want to rid pop-ups I have to pay so much $'s, that I have not got. Anyone else getting these.

All I can say is luckily I live alone with my son, or I would be convinced that HE had something to do with it.

I hope that you didn't mind me asking. Thank-you.

Really the only way you'll be able to stop them is to get a popper up stopper program. We use Pop-Up Stopper Pro. I'm not sure how much it costs but if you want to ask mumsnet for my email address and drop me a line I could get a copy out to you.

Unfortunately I haven't found a program that stops those new kinds of pop ups, like the persil one that was on here a while ago. But those kind of pop ups tend not to be porn related.

HTH

I've heard that Norton Internet Security 2002 (I think that's what it's called) is meant to be very good at stopping these. It's probably more expensive than some but does include virus protection and (I think) a firewall.

bouncy - pop-up stopper may help, but if you're getting porn pop-ups when you visit sites like mumsnet then you have a virus. You need to get some anti-virus software or update your existing software and do a full scan. The best anti-virus programme is Norton - you can download a trial version here

Thanks everyone. I have gone to this site and downloaded the free trial. Obviously this is something that I need to get. It is in dollars. Will I be able to buy this from PC World. Thank-you

bouncy - yes, sorry, my internet connection is playing up - but when you go to buy it online, you'll see a link to "global stores" - in there somewhere is a UK one. You can also buy it in PC World, but do make sure you update it frequently (it's all in the instructions).

Before you pay for a virus checker there are some extremely good ones that are completely free for personal use (and as they are less well known are less likely to be targetted by viruses themselves - I've had Norton compromised by a virus before now).

The one I use on this PC is Kaspersky Anti-Virus again which I can thoroughly recommend.

For some reason it didn't post the middle of that message!!! The middle paragraph should have read:

The one I use on this PC is AVG Anti-Virus which I can thoroughly recommend. It even has a little batchfile that runs checks even before Windows gets loaded on bootup.

Further note - the Kaspersky one is a paid for program which you may prefer (sorry, couldn't remember what I'd written that was missing)

GeorginaA · 29/03/2003 11:55

It is NOT my day today ... the link for kaspersky should be here

SoupDragon · 29/03/2003 12:34

Georgina, you need to include a , somewhere inbetween the first link and the second link to avoid chunks of text disappearing. I had to get Tech to tell me that!!

Thanks SoupDragon - I knew I had severely messed it up somewhere!!
