Bedtime routines - at what age did your DC start going to bed without help?

and does this include bathing, brushing hair and teeth etc.?

I ask because over the christmas break I found it difficult to simultaneously entertain guests and put the DDs (aged 9 & 6 years) to bed. So one night I sent DD1 up to run the bath by herself, this evolved over the fortnight into DD1 bathing herself and dressing for bed. ...This evening, we came home late and I sent the DDs up to get ready by themselves, whilst I made their cocoa and filled their hot-water-bottles, usually I would go up with them and help them. I was very tempted to just send them up, cup and bottle in hand, to put themselves to bed too, because I felt exhausted and couldn't face the walk up the stairs. I decided this wasn't a good enough reason to not tuck them in, but it did get me thinking: How do other families work?

My DCs are not old enough yet but I used to put myself to bed from age 8.

My mum would come in and see me while I was was reading to myself, for a kiss and to say 'light off and the end of the chapter'

Mine are 8 & 5 and have been wondering the same. Im sure i used to do myself by 8ish.

Thinking about this further, I could put DD2 to bed, see that she is settled, then send DD1 up to bed a little later (she is crying out for a separate bedtime!) and still kiss her goodnight once she has settled herself. This might even [hopeful] put an end to DDs sneakily carrying on reading past 10pm... Thanks OTC (Why didn't I think of that before...?!)

In our house DD2 can run a bath etc and she is 11 (still at primary!) we trust DD3 to brush her teeth and have a bath, just not run it! I could imagine the amount of bubbles in her bath!

When DD1 went to Secondary then she started to actually see herself to bed without us tucking her in!

We still check on all 3 even now before we go to bed - DD1 is nearly 15.

I think I was 8 or so, but my mother's parenting can be rather questionable (she was born a century too late!) so I can never be sure whether to follow suit (sp?) or not.

Did you work towards DD1 putting herself to bed Pink, or did she just start to do it herself? (Wondering whether there is a natural progression.)

Crumbs, I can't remember! Think it gradually happened over the summer holiday from primary to secondary school!
