the bride and groom have asked for money towards the house they might buy one day. frankly that seems like buying tickets to teh wedding and i am not willing to do it. (this thread is not about the rights and wrongs of that decision, just info given for background!). So as they love wine I thought a nice crate with a few bottles in it that perhaps mature over time would be a nice thing to give. But i cant find anything obvious on the itnernet and the only one i know of is in another part of the country and does not deliver. any ideas anyone? thanks!! prob willing to pay somewhere around £50-60 for this gift.

i guess you could order it from ocado for them? or one of the wine clubs like sunday times wine club? that sounds a very thoughtful gift.

nowwearefour · 04/01/2009 19:51

thanks. i just dont really know anything about wine so i guess i need some experience and advice. maybe those laithwaites thingies do them. i will look it up!

We have regular cases from virgin wines and I can vouch for their quality. Otherwise I would go into a wine merchant - pref a small local one or failing that somewhere like Majestic or Oddbins (are Oddbins still going?), and ask them. The staff in that sort of place tend to know what they are talking about.

Do they have a cellar?
I mean if you buy wine to lay down can they keep it properly?
I would just get them a couple of bottles of something nice that is drinking now/in next year or so

we got a case of 12 bottles of wine for a wedding gift, nothing fancy but we were really pleased with it

nowwearefour · 04/01/2009 20:53

thanks that is nice to know. it does appear that a case of 12 is quite pricey but maybe i am trying to go too high end on the wine. i will go for something a bit more normal maybe

We had the same idea for a friends wedding last year. We had a budget of £40 and wanted a bottle of white and bottle of red. Had no clue on whats good and whats not. Like you we looked online but didn't help. Then went and visited this wine cellar near where DH works. So so so helpful. The woman was pasionate about wine but didn't make us seem stupid for not knowing what kind of red we wanted. She choose 2 bottles, smack on budget (and included the price of a decent gift box in that too) and even choose them on the fact they taste good drunk straight away or left to lay down for a few years. Bride & Groom later said they were very nice wines and impressed with them. So give them a call, they appear to do mail delivery.

We had been together for 12 years when we got married and a friend bought us 12 bottles of wine, one vintage from each year that we had been together. Very thoughtful and much appreciated gift.

We get cases of wine by the CRATE-load (Bre...).
Sunday Times Wine Club.

I've used Majestic online for gifts (though not wedding) a few times, and have always had good service from them (and the recipient has enjoyed the wine, AFAIK)

Carmenere · 04/01/2009 23:55

For that price range I would buy them 6 bottles of £10 wine rather than 12 of £5 iyswim and I would throw yourself on the mercy of someone who works in a decent wine shop, Oddbins at least but preferably an independent as they tend to have more passionate and knowledgeable staff/owners. It is a lovely idea for a decent gift.

Carmenere · 04/01/2009 23:57

Actually Majestic are good and I'll bet you get a great deal there after Christmas, that is a good idea.

nowwearefour · 05/01/2009 11:47

thanks i am looking. i guess i wondered if anyone knew of an independent wine place i could speak to but wine specialists are wine specialists doesnt really matter where they work i suppose !

Not sure where you live to see if this is possible but for my husband's first anniversary present I adopted a vine in an English Vineyard in his name for a year. It wasn't that costly and we later visited the vineyard for a weekend and ordered wine through their website here (which is lovely!).

Just in case you'd be interested in an alternative idea

We have had some lovely wines from this company They tend to do small independant vinaries instead of the better known ones but the ones I hava had have been lovely and good value too.
