What features are very good to have and what is not important?>

OP posts:

i cant talk indepth but i have had a tom tom and then i bought a cheapo navman

tom toms are quicker than cheapo knockoffs - which is handy when it wants to to turn right....erm...10 seconds ago.

the display is infinatley better - the navigation of the features is easy - like volume - night screen - i mean its there on the other but finding its an arseache and you dont want to be fucking around searching for the volume when your driving - them pulling over to effing well find it etc.

No question. I've had two, they are fab and very easy to use. Navman (Navmen?) are shite, Garmin is banned because the adverts pee me off, and I think they are supposed to be shite as well.

icantdoit · 21/12/2008 20:53

navman is fab. I have the s30 and dh has an N-something. they are really clear and easy to use, can't fault it at all

jellyjelly · 21/12/2008 20:53

egg tell me why you like it. there seems to be so much choice. I used one before and it had so many cables adn they just draped everywhere it was a garver and couldnt get me to my destination and instead took me to some bins and said i was there - i wasnt.

How do you know which ones are more accurate?

OP posts:
cmotdibbler · 21/12/2008 20:53

I'm not really sure what the actual differences are - they all differ with the mapping and the way they display things.

In the Which tests, the Garmins and TomTom come out really well.

I have a TT 720, and for someone who drives a lot in unfamiliar cities, may need to go to somewhere unexpected etc, it is absolutely brilliant. I have no complaints about it at all, and I was thinking this week that it has changed my driving life. I really like the prestored lists of hospitals, garages, train stations etc so that you can find them whereever you are

RumMum · 21/12/2008 20:56

welllllll I got my dad a nav man (F10) I think.. anyway he didn't get on with it.. said it wouldn't talk to him.. so I borrowed it to sort it out and I've never given it back! I have nothing to compare it too but I do love the 'keep in the left hand lane' and such.... it tells me my estimated time of arrival and how far we have left to go..

Love it...........

TomTom Go 520 - Which best buy £180 at Halfords

jellyjelly · 21/12/2008 20:57

I want to be told in advance what lane to be in, i nearly had an accident a few times with the one i borrowed. And it wasnt clear which lane to get in. How do you know how much advance it gives. Is there a certian term that they use?

Which have done an accuracy test - Garmin comes out top, but the model tested is £290

The Best Buy Garmin Nüvi 860T is the best currently available sat nav we?ve tested. It is easy to use, and offers strong performance across all assessment areas.

It is easy to install, and the easiest of any to program ? our testers found the voice recognition system very responsive and useful. All programming can be done using this feature, with no need to touch the screen at all.

It comes with European mapping covering 35 countries as standard. Routing accuracy is excellent, and the traffic management system provides good information, with estimated delay times. If you make a wrong turn, re-routing calculations are fast and accurate.

Other powerful features include the ability to save ?favourite? locations, either at programming stage or by saving ?current position?.

The display is a reasonably large (109mm) widescreen format, which provides good, clear images, but isn?t as good as some smaller screens for storage. That said, it can still fit into larger pockets.

It displays a split screen when approaching a turn, with a schematic view of the intersection and a countdown to the junction next to the route map. We also like the Panoramio feature, which provides photos and location information about ?favourites? or points of interest.

Pros: First-rate voice recognition, very easy programming, very straightforward to change routes

Cons: None

Ah no only one wire from cigarette lighter to satnav screen. It is great as no matter what I do (ignore indicator lady as DS1 calls her) I always get there! If I choose to go a different way, or if I miss a turning, she just tells me where to turn next. Even in the depths of Devon in the middle of nowhere.

She does get confused going to Legoland though.

Gingerbear · 21/12/2008 21:01

Go into Halfords and discuss it wiith them.

Egg · 21/12/2008 21:03

jellyjelly my tomtom doesn't tell me which lane to be in, but does say "in 200 yards bear right" etc.

jellyjelly · 21/12/2008 21:04

thats ok when you know how far that is egg!!!

OP posts:
Egg · 21/12/2008 21:11

I still have no idea how far 200 yards is...

It does do a countdown on screen though, so you can see it getting lower and lower and work out where to turn.

cmotdibbler · 21/12/2008 21:13

I think Garmin now have Lane Assist which shows you exactly which one to be in

jellyjelly · 25/12/2008 22:35

Hi, just wanted to say thanks everyone for your help, not a gloat but i got one today so now i dont have to decide and its lovely so thank again.

OP posts:
Gingerbear · 26/12/2008 21:43

what did you get?

jellyjelly · 28/12/2008 10:03

i got a tom tom one series/version 4. Have used it from my parents to my house and back - i knew the way but wanted to use it.

I was a bit disaapointed that you had to pay for the celebrity voices, its not alot but still. I got a very english lady. It didnt download the first time so i had to try again and i hope its worked.

I like some of the features that i can call for help and it will walk with me if i get lost which i thought was quite good.

I want to get a sat nav - tom toms seem to be very recommended. I was looking at a Garmin Nuvi 200W which had some good reviews.

I believe that you have the update the maps every so often. Can you do this for free with any of the systems as Garmin seem to charge for this.

I don't want a "fancy" one with loads of features as I won't be driving in Europe, just sometime reliable and easy to set up and use.
