Hello I am writing a covering letter and I need to know if I should use capital letters for the following. 'I have recieved training in Paediatric first aid and Child protection'? Does anyone know if that is correct or not? I really need to hand it in today so I would be grateful for feedback. Thanks x

I would stick to lower case but am not particularly clever. Hope this helps!

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 18/12/2008 10:06

Oh dear, I was going to say the opposite to mysterymoniker!

In fact I would probably have written Paediatric First Aid and Child Protection.

I'm just making it worse aren't I?!

Siriusmewandtinseltoo · 18/12/2008 10:07

I think protection and first aid should have capitals too as they are the titles of qualifications

VinegarTitsTheSeasonToBeJolly · 18/12/2008 10:08

Agree with deckthegirl, all caps except for the 'and'

MegGriffin · 18/12/2008 10:08

Yikes! It's a tricky one. I know that names and titles usually have capitals but this one is a bit of a grey area for me. It's for a TA job so I really don't want my application to be binned before it's even been read.

Yes, capitals. I work in hospital for the head of Child Prot and it always gets capital letters.

MegGriffin · 18/12/2008 10:10

Thanks everyone. I think I will go with the capitals then.

OP posts:
Tortington · 18/12/2008 10:11

i would have capped each first letter too

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 18/12/2008 10:12

OMG, am I right?!

Blimey

mysterymoniker · 18/12/2008 10:12

I think you are right deckgirl

edam · 18/12/2008 10:12

I'm a writer/editor and would go lower case. They are not proper names.

Head of child protection in a hospital may well get initial caps as it's a job title - although style is generally moving away from capping up these words.

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 18/12/2008 10:14

Ohhhh, shot down in flames........ and I was feeling so happy!

Tortington · 18/12/2008 10:16

well i kinda knew it was wrong when i knew it was something i did.

Penthesileia · 18/12/2008 10:17

Agree - they seem to be almost 'proper' nouns (like names) so could do with capitals.

Plus: i before e except after c: RECEIVED!

edam · 18/12/2008 10:17

Don't worry! I really wouldn't cap it up but most people won't mind - look at the thread. I might use caps if I was writing a list such as 'Training: Child Protection, Paediatric First Aid, Something Else.' As it would be the title of the course.

Penthesileia · 18/12/2008 10:18

Oops - that's me corrected! Go with Edam - she seems to know what she's talking about.

RECEIVED is still right though!

cornsilk · 18/12/2008 10:18

Edam if it was a recognised qualification such as a certificate in child protection, rather than just training in child protection would it still be lower case?

OsmosisFaLaLaLaLa · 18/12/2008 10:20

I didn't mean her job title, she always gives Child Prot capitals whenever she has written something about it ie new training schedules etc.

But you're prob right, I'm just argumentative.

Umlellala · 18/12/2008 10:23

Yes, as edam said, it's about how you received training - was it one course on Paediatric First Aid or several courses in the field of paediatric first aid? Ditto one course in Child Protection or several courses in the field of child protection?

Looks acceptable either way IMO.

received. recieved. yes, definitely received.

Umlellala · 18/12/2008 10:25

Actually, I probably would capitalise Child Protection because it is an 'official' title iykwim.

MegGriffin · 18/12/2008 10:35

I have double checked received and luckily it was correct on the letter, I just typed it incorrectly on here. I have gone with capitals when listing the courses as that seems to be the majority opinion. You are all wonderful, thankyou.

Anna8888 · 18/12/2008 10:40

No, lower case for both paediatric and child in that particular sentence.

If you had diplomas or certificates or degrees or some other qualification, you would write the title of the qualification with initial upper case.

DeckTheHallsWithBling · 18/12/2008 10:41

If you were in America, you'd capitalise. In the UK, it's as Anna said.

ISawMumiKissingSantaClaus · 18/12/2008 10:43

Agree with Anna8888.

edam · 18/12/2008 12:28

If you were listing your specific qualifications (rather than talking generally about having training in child protection), I'd cap the titles of those qualifications: "Certificate in Child Protection", for instance.
