Fancy dress birthday party for 4 year old girl

My dd will be 4 in May, and has decided that she wants a fancy dress party. We'll probably have it at home (hopefully in the garden) but I don't really know what else I should lay on for a bunch of 4 year olds! Games, music, that sort of thing. Or are these things better off held in a church hall or something somewhere?

I'm also wondering whether a themed fancy dress party would be a good idea ... and if so, what sort of themes would be good for a bunch of 4 year olds? She's quite a girlie girl but doesn't really have any favourite characters, just likes to dress up. There will be boys coming too, so I can't have a Barbie theme or anything like that.

Any thoughts?

In your wench costume

Will have a think about more games etc

The boxes you get work very well for tea they can't spill off plate unless you are strict about sitting at table

we had them sitting on mats in garden and the boxes werre brill

NOT in my wench costume

I haven't seen the party boxes for food, they sound like a better idea than plates.

Do parents of 4 year olds generally want to stay for parties at home? If the NCT group come they will probably stay because we're all friends, but what about friends from nursery?

My dd went to a party like this a few months ago (someone's 5th birthday) I think the theme was Fairy Tales. All the girls wore their fairy costumes and the boys came in more imaginative costumes - Robin Hood I remember. My dd loved it.

RTKangaMummy · 23/03/2005 20:17

party pieces but do NOT get their cups with straws they were useless

WigWamBam · 23/03/2005 20:19

Fairy tales is good too, lonelymum, it widens the scope of the fancy dress costumes a bit, which might help if people don't want to have to make or buy a special one.

I don't know why she's so dead set on a fancy dress party, but she is ... I hope all her friends are as keen!

here they are I hope

Lonelymum · 23/03/2005 20:21

The girls will be WWB surely?

RTKangaMummy · 23/03/2005 20:22

At DS 4th some parents stayed and some didn't all the time

Find it more stressful if loads stayed

unless they will help

WigWamBam · 23/03/2005 20:24

Just looked at the Party Pieces website ... they've got some fab stuff, I like the food boxes shaped like treasure chests and stuff!

I can feel a spending spree coming on ... dh is going to get really cross!

Also the age balloons are not huge

But if they are the same as before the jewel balloons are lovely

they are sort of pearlised

wobblyknicks · 23/03/2005 20:27

wwb - why aren't you on msn, I want to know how today went!! (hi btw )

MunchedTooManyMarsLady · 23/03/2005 20:27

Chocolate coins for the party bags.

We got polysterene ones from COSTCO and wrote names on them

also they don't get mixed up either

WigWamBam · 23/03/2005 20:35

That's a good idea, or cartons of fresh juice with straws.
