I had been gradually stocking up for christmas as well Is there any shop out there that I can walk into tomorrow and have it delivered same day?

Bugger Just checked where you are as I have a spare freezer but I am in the east.

Bump for any one nearer?

Otherwise can you go begging to the neighbours until Monday?

nancy75 · 12/12/2008 23:11

doubt if you will get delivery on a saturday, if you can get it home yoursef you might be able to buy display on efrom comet or somewhere similar?

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/12/2008 23:12

Even if you buy tomorrow, you're supposed to let it stand before using it, aren't you?

Favour from neighbours is a good idea if you can do it.

whomovedmychocolate · 12/12/2008 23:13

John lewis can do them in two days. But that's probably the quickest you'll get at this time of year.

littlelamb · 12/12/2008 23:13

It has been dripping for a while but now it has stopped 'humming' and I can stick my finger straight in the tub of ice cream, which I gave dd earlier. No wonder she had a poorly tummy afterwards The thing is, its my landlords fridge. Will he have to replace it? So close to christmas as well, so I'm sure its the last thing he needs as well.

littlelamb · 12/12/2008 23:14

Mary, can I ask what you mean by letting it stand?

OP posts:
nancy75 · 12/12/2008 23:15

if it comes with the house he will need to replace it, unless you want to buy it and take with you when/if you move out?

whomovedmychocolate · 12/12/2008 23:15

Or strangely Iceland But be careful if you buy from there, they may not be around in six months if you need to make a warranty claim.

Why not ask on Freecycle if anyone has one - they may have one in a garage they would be willing to plug in for you for a few days for a couple of quid for the electricity if you don't want to have it delivered.

whomovedmychocolate · 12/12/2008 23:15

BTW are you sure it's really dead?

littlelamb · 12/12/2008 23:16

Freecycle an excellent idea thank you

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/12/2008 23:19

I think that when you move a fridge freezer you need to let it just stand there without being switched on to let the chemicals (or whatever it is that makes a fridge work) just settle in to the right place. I could be wrong on that, just something I remember from moving house.

littlelamb · 12/12/2008 23:19

wmmc, I'm pretty sure. I was suspicious this morning, but I checked the freezer this afternoon and the ice cream was solid. But now its really soft. It doesn't feel cold when I open it. I think it might be defrosting itself, which would explain the dripping

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/12/2008 23:21

Insurance?

If it's already defrosting, I'd be worried about re-freezing the meat in there.

I know that doesn't resolve your Christmas problem though - will take a while for insurance to come through.

missblythe · 12/12/2008 23:22

A local, non-chain store, would be your best bet. Might be a bit more expensive, but more likely to have one that you can have there and then.

nancy75 · 12/12/2008 23:22

try unpluging it then turning it on again - works with computers!

whomovedmychocolate · 12/12/2008 23:25

Okay, pull the freezer out, and check the back. Feel the actual fans at the back, if you can't hear them working they aren't working. If it feels hot at the back it's still working and perhaps the seals have gone.

Food will stay at a safe temperature for 24 hours with the door shut. Does it have a temperature indicator - can you turn it up full?

It may be that the back fan is gunked up and that can stop them working, or the fuse may have gone. If you have no power it is either the fuse or the motor. You can change the fuse. Don't give up hope until you've really checked.

What is the fridge doing?

littlelamb · 12/12/2008 23:28

Can't hear anything at the back. The fridge doesn't feel terribly cold, there's condensation type water on the back wall but on the plus the light still works It's buggered isn't it. I don't have insurance

OP posts:
nancy75 · 12/12/2008 23:30

you dont need insurance, if it comes with the house its up to the landlord to replace, and afaik he cant leave you without a fridge while he waits for the insurance to pay up

whomovedmychocolate · 12/12/2008 23:42

If you can't hear anything (even with your ear on the big metally tubey bits) then yes I'm afraid your fridgefreezer has gone to the great recycler in the sky

The fridge may still be working. Keep it shut if you can and hunt for some short term alternatives.

I went into Currys last saturday to get a new dishwasher, they delivered it on sunday

littlelamb · 13/12/2008 00:06

Thanks forall the suggestions. I am going to call all the places I can think of tomorrow to see who can deliver. I think I'm most upset about losing the ebm supply I had been building up, but never mind. One cheeky question though. My landlord lives out of town and previously I have arranged repairs and just taken it off the rent at the end of the month. Assuming he's happy for me to do that again, do you think its reasonable to add, say 30 quid to the total so I can restock some of the basics? I have about 20 frozen salmon fillets that will have to be binned, as well as milk, yoghurts for dd, stuff that I have batch cooked

whomovedmychocolate · 14/12/2008 00:03

Did you get one? Yes of course he should compensate you for lost food.

littlelamb · 14/12/2008 00:11

WMMC, hello my late night friend Yes, I managed to get one at Currys. Well, they are delivering it on Monday but it's better than nothing. Its a beautiful shiny silver one. Landlord was amazing about it actually, they told me they trusted me to pick a nice one, and to get extra insurance and just knock it off my rent. Currys will even take my old one away. The food is beyond salvaging unfortunately, but I reckon I could replace it quite cheaply, so I might just knock the extra money off my rent- I'll ask them first of course, but I think they'll be fine with it. I had no luck with freecycle btw- just a chancer telling me he'd flog me one for a hundred quid

Hurrah! That's great news. Hope you had a big party and invited all your friends to eat various odd things from the freezer (we had an 'ice cream and frozen cake' party when ours went!)

Chandon · 14/12/2008 10:50

put your your food outside, it´´s cold enough.
