What age can they go ice skating?

ds wants to go, he is 5

dd1 wants to go, she is 3

I don't want to go, I am 31.

Am I right in hoping saying we are all too young?

dd1 points out that she can ride a bike, this is true but iirc quite different skills are used...

so being serious, how old do you reckon they should be before they give it a go? It would be just me on the ice with two of them, though dp would be at the edge to take care of any casualties.

I took mine when they were that age, they had roller skates and noone fell over.
However, if they are clinging onto you it will be a nightmare. Could dp not come on with you too?

Fillyjonk · 11/12/2008 19:07

no he has to look after dd2 who is 9 months

hmm...really at 3?

oh dear

We go quite often as dd1 (9) is very keen. There are littlies on there but don't often see a 3 year old tbh. I think it would be better if there were 2 of you to help if poss? Also it can get very crowded at weekends/non-school times. Could you take them one at a time separately?

UnfortunatelyMe · 11/12/2008 19:14

I guess if dp is there you could go round with one, swap, go round with the other, swap.
Mine HAD had roller skates and so had the practice. I took my friends little boy once and he was just a clinging ton weight giggling hanging onto my leg. He couldnt do the leg moving one at a time thing.

The last time I went ice skating, I broke my wrist and couldn't drive etc for five weeks.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 11/12/2008 19:16

DD went first when she was about 18mths!

PestoHoHoHoMonster · 11/12/2008 19:18

Mine were about 4 and 6 when we first took them. It is much easier if you have one adult per child though. So could you take a friend or sibling with you if your DP is going to be otherwise occupied?

Majeika · 11/12/2008 19:19

Mine were 3 and 6 and the 3 yr old was fab at it!!

You will need another adult though. My dSis came with us and she is 22!

GrimmaTheNome · 11/12/2008 19:22

I happened to open the link on the MN newsletter to cribbs causeway and it has a pic of quite a small child supported by a penguin rather than mummy-clinging. So maybe do it if the rink has small-child-friendly equipment?

TheInvisibleManDidItWithSanta · 11/12/2008 19:25

PuppyMonkeyNuts, dh toold ds1 on sat and ended up in a&e for rest of afternoon!!

Fillyjonk, I think they're def old enough. Children seem to take to it naturally. It's 38 yo dh's that have the problem!!

Fillyjonk · 11/12/2008 19:25

oh dang we are quite close to cribbs causeway

on the one hand they have been lobbying for this now for nearly 18 months

otoh, fgs, it will be cold and I am worried one of us will slip on the ice and an ice skate will slice our hands off. (sorry. but that is my ice skating fear). Roller skating is the way to go, a nice safe sport and with the opportunity to wear leg warmers

I took my son at two and three quarters years old. He was very late learning to walk and was infact under a child physio at the time. I think if a child can walk unaided then they are old enough to learn to ice skate.

I see no reason why you could not take both your children, but you would need two adults. There needs to be one adult to console a child if they fall over and the other adult to watch the other child. As their confidence improves then it will only need one adult supervising.

I haven't taken my son for ages, but then I'm nervous because I am pregnant.

TheInvisibleManDidItWithSanta · 11/12/2008 19:35

FIlly that's my worry too!!

I went every fri from the age of 12 to about 17, and have never seen it happen, but it was my first thought when dh called me on sat to sy I had to go get them.

apuppydaviesisforlife · 11/12/2008 20:59

i think you live round my way filly ;) they have skates with 2 blades rather than 1 for the teenies, helps somewhat with balance. still need an adult each though - would take it in turns if i were you.

except i skip out of the skating every year, pregnancy and small baby have been my excuses so far, resorting to flat refusal this year

Hulababy · 11/12/2008 21:01

DD went at about 4y I think. They only had single baldes. Was fine but hard work for me. I am not very good at skating and it took me all my time to support DD on the ice. However after about 20 minutes r so DD was really getting the hang of it.

Mind you only done it a couple of times since - she is now 6y. I need to get my energies up to go again!

TBH though I think you need 1 to 1 for the first time.

LilRedWG · 11/12/2008 21:05

No advice, but the hand thing is my fear too, especially as it happened to one of my sister's friends - right across the palm!

Fillyjonk · 12/12/2008 06:30

noooooooooooooooooooo lilred noooooooooooooooooooooo

ok sadly it appears that we do need 1-1, terrible that...

this might be a daft question but esp to puppy who may live near me...(am not in bristol, am over the bridge though) : would it work for them to take turns going onto the ice? So I would stay on the ice the whole time but they would have maybe 20 minutes on, then the other would have 20 minutes, and so on,

dd1 is pretty physically adept, and she is 3.5 so I suppose it is not impossible that she will manage this one. But really.
